I actually have some jars fruiting right now that i substituted perlite for vermiculite in the substrate mix.

Some of the jars are slow to colonize but the one I birthed has about 7 mushrooms growing on it with more popping out everyday.

The other jars have pins all over them, the bottom has just been slow to colonize on those.

cool, it;s frequently answered as no on that substitution, but aparently it's
working for someone, most people find that perlite wont hold enough water
which could account for your slow colonization

yeah, I left them for the coyotes, a single hole in the neck of each suggested that it wasnt the coyotes that got them

It may be that but the tops of the jars all colonized within 21 days completely. The bottoms were pretty thick with brf probably due to the perlite letting go of too much water while in the pc.

I pounded the jars a little bit this morning and I can already see growth on the bottoms. I believe that was the problem. Hopefully I can birth those in a day or two.

Here are some pics of the cake i birthed using perlite instead of verm.

Where does the moisture come from to retain? lol

vermiculte is used for heat retention, it can be absorbed and released by the
vermiculite and it maintains that heat for a pretty good length of time,
the sell it for insulation, BBQs, and fireplaces, this is the first I've heard
of it being used for incubators but it's something I'll be looking into 'cuz
my wife wants some chickens and a few ducks and peafowl (shes never heard how loud
they can get)
