vermiculite casing....
    #4407660 - 07/15/05 02:26 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

has anyone had decent results from using just vermiculate to case with....if so, would you say it would yield more than a cake in comparison? I dont have access to horse poo, or jiffy mix ect...I just want to try it with 1 half pint brf cake.

Diver gets great results using straight verm. on occasion. I'm sure he uses more then 1 BRF cake, lol. That will be very small. I'd recommend at least two. And yes a cased cake should yield more then an uncased just due to moisture availability for the cake.

I've only crumbled cakes before I moved on to grains and poo. I got an increase of 37% versuses uncased cakes.

It is all here, in the posts, and in the tek section. You can learn as you go. It is really the best way. Cakes break up easily, into a little aluminum pan, done with washed hands, with 3/8 inch of vermiculite over it, in a humid place. Poo is a bigger step, specially if you get caught in the kitchen with a steaming pan of dung! Don't do it all at once, one small step at a time. Focus on a clean orderly operation (unlike me!) over anything else.

check out this, 'micro-casing' it's only half a cake, crumbled and covered with 1/4" of 100%verm in a piece of clay pottery.

The pins are 1 day old in this pic.
the bottom of the pottery is 4" across.

tell me more about what you do with your version of the vermiculite casing. Do you make "valleys" through your casing to increase surface area or do you just level it out? How much do you layer it with Etc. Etc.
I'm using the Penis Envy strain casing it with ? inch of Pro Mix BX (peat with micoriza, vermin. and pearlite already in it) over top of an inch of rye grain *nothing underneath the grain* and my results are short squat but DENSE mushrooms whos partial veil tears when they are about 2 inches tall! Pretty pathetic yields on my part.

i believe you do smooth the casing layer, but not perfect, you want to leave regular imperfections in your smoothing job
