and one casing question

My ex girlfriend also has a couple of vermiculite cased crumbled brf cakes in the closet, and this being her second round of casing ever, she is starting to notice a trend. It seems that every time she crumbles a new cake into the vermiculite, and puts the casing away for a couple days, growth always starts out really aggressive. The case is taken out after a few days and checked, vermiculite is added to the areas poking through already to try to get a more even flush, water is sprayed on the verm if it seems dry, and it is put back in the closet for a few more days. So far so good. However, it is at this stage that growth always seems to slow. Four or five days later, no mycelium is peeking through, even though only minimal vermiculite was applied the first time over the high spots. The last time, she ended up after a week, putting the cases in the terrarium with hardly any visible mycellium. It worked after awhile, but she was just wondering what had to be done to get a more conventional casing. Should she refrain from adding water during the first phase of the casing? I noticed that when the initial fluffy mycellium that was peeking through was sprayed down, it kind of got wetted down, losing its fluffiness, could this cause a sort of overlay? Finally, what is the average time in your guys experience between crumbling the cakes and pinning, so she knows what to shoot for. Her avg. has been about two weeks, which I think is too long. Any suggestions?
