Just break it up into fairly small pieces, like 1/2" or so.

Yeah.. gently break it up in dime size chunks. What I find works better though is just cut your cakes in halves and put them down in big circles. then take an extra circle and crumble it up and put it in the empty spaces in between the circles.

I usually "dump" my cakes into a new ziploc bag and gently crumble the cake into small pieces like Ryche said and simply pour the substrate over my base layer of vermiculite and top off with Ryche's 50/50+ Tek.
