Just break it up into fairly small pieces, like 1/2" or so.

I usually "dump" my cakes into a new ziploc bag and gently crumble the cake into small pieces like Ryche said and simply pour the substrate over my base layer of vermiculite and top off with Ryche's 50/50+ Tek.
