Can you substitute perlite for vermiculite in the jars for the PF-Tek?

Coca coir usually gets the most votes, though I've never tried it. I've also read one post where someone reccommended Jiffy-Mix seed starter (make sure you don't get any products with fertilizer in them, though).

Vermiculite is also available online at www.mycosupply.com under substrates or http://wardsci.com/product.asp?pn=208610&sid=OVERTURE&EID=OV002088 just to name a couple.  Of course, that only helps if the difficulty of finding it is the reason you are interested in substitutes.    :mushroom2:

Verm. is not at every nursery. Just like Jiffy mix isn't at every Wally World. I live in a city of about 200,000 and only one nursery carries it. I know, I've called every one in the phone book. My local Wally World doesn't carry Jiffy Mix. The Home Depot only carries it till May then sends all unsold items back to the distributor.

As a matter of fact, perlite DOES work in PF jars. I used it exclusively for about a year until i found a verm supplier.

Ya. Whoever said every Wally World has Jiffy Mix is a LIAR. I spent 20 min looking just to find out they didnt. And, not every nursery carries verm either. I used to work at one, so I had to stock the shelves, and didnt ever hear of verm until just recently.

Go to your local Home Depot, Lowes, etc. If they don't have it, ask the garden dept. manager if they can special order some for you and that you will even pay in advance. It usually sells in very large bags of about 4 cubic ft for around $10 where I live. They may or may not order it for you, but it doesn't hurt to ask  If you still can't find any, PM me and let me know how much you need. I just bought a big bag of it tonight. I'll give you some for free, you just have to pay the shipping.  Peace.

yeah, i have asked for them to order me some in and they refused and said that the company will no longer allow them to carry vermiculite. that was at home depot, wally world, and lowes. lowes did have some earlier this spring but after what they had was gone they were not going to carry it anymore either.
some peeps here have provided some great links to buy this stuff online and i greatly appreciate it.

peace

Don't ask them to carry it, ask them to special order it for you. I know that they do it at the Lowes where I live. I keep hearing people say that Home Depot, Lowes, etc won't sell verm anymore because of health issues. If that was the case, then why can I get it at the Home Depot around the corner? If it were a health issue, I'm sure that ALL of these stores nationwide would stop selling it. It's usually a seasonal/location issue, not a health issue. The garden department managers should be able to special order some for you. Be nice and persistent. They say that they can't order it because it's not really worth it to special order a $10 item, as they get no commission on it. If they tell you they can't do it, tell them you want to talk to the store manager about it. This will usually prompt the garden manager to be a little more helpful, as he doesn't want the store manager thinking that he isn't being 100% helpful to the customer. If all of this doesn't work, burn the store down! J/K

You might be able to use cut up open cell foam, like in cushions. I am going to be trying some out soon.
