Bikrum Yoga kicked my ass
    #3911536 - 03/13/05 03:15 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Jeez, i was in a 105 degree room doing some pretty intense yoga. It is miserable getting through 90 minutes, but pure elation and envigoration once you step out, ever bit of my energy came back. Until I stepped out that door, I was telling myself I would never do bikrum yoga again, but now i signed up for a month.
Anyone else do bikrum yoga? or any other type?

I have always meant to get into yoga, but it looks hard and I am lazy deep down in my soul.

Yes. I've practiced Yoga since 1973. Patanjali's classic formulation has guided me through many Entheogenic Excursions, not to mention my day-to-day, moment-to-moment life of 'choices.' Most choices are governed by the discipline of Yoga, while my moral choices are governed by my faith in the personality of Christ. Yoga psychophysical discipline is applicable to any religious faith even if one rejects the metaphysics which are Hindu.

Yeah man, I've done some Karma Yoga and Dhyana Yoga, but never Bikram Yoga. Sounds intense, I'd love to try it..

Ive done Hatha and Ashtanga (if thats how you spell it) Yoga. My main practice consists of Ananda Marga yoga classes which i attend for free because of the generosity of the monk who gives the demonstrations for the asanas. i hear Kundalini Yoga is mind-blowing.

im no expert, but i have been told yoga is not to be continued to a point where it makes you sore. If you experience discomfort, stop. stay within your comfort zone, Asanas= postures held comfortably. Dont have to push yourself too far, and remember that yoga should leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed, and revitalized not sore.

Excellent point. Moreover, there is a correct way to assume the postures, and many incorrect ways. Certain asanas are meant to follow others. For example, a shoulder-stand becomes a plough, but not in one motion unless one is well-practiced. It is done one leg brought over at a time, with one leg remaining upright, and the legs are never to be scissored. When amply stretched, both are brought over in slow controlled manner, toes eventually on the ground, legs lengthened. Too many American marketers of Hatha Yoga just make this practice another extraverted muscle-bound body-beautiful narcissistic competition. It is more like tuning a stringed instrument.

you are going to get sore muscles no matter what if you went from an unexercised lifestyle (beyond walking and jogging) to hard core position holding. Im no yoga master, but i was doing some of the poses correctly. There shouldnt be pain while doing it, but sometimes muscles will get sore.

I practice in the early morning, after a hot shower. It helps relax the muscles, why not try that?

the hot room is supposed to relax the muscles somewhat as well as release any toxins that are built up in the body. My girlfriend does Bikrum yoga every morning - she has a 6am class and it sets the course of her day. I will be joining her once my schedule is more open.

That has been my experience with Bikram yoga... the way you feel afterwards makes it more than worth it. However, having been to both "bootcamp" style classes and, well, those that emphasize more than the physical aspect of the practice, I have to say that finding a good instructor is really important if you want to enjoy yourself *during* the class.

I personally don't enjoy aggresive instructors.. but that's individual. I get a lot more out of yoga than just exercise.. and the Bikram classes I go to now are actually a LOT more physically demanding than the "bootcamp" classes I used to go to.
I love Kundalini. I've done Kundalini with a few different instructors, and their styles were all completely different. It all really comes down to finding an instructor that suits you, if you want to go really deep into your practice.

My two cents..  :sun:

on a side note to this many native americans use the practice of sweat baths. Actualy, reviewing the concept of a sweat bath it has been used in many cultures and all have a very simualr meaning. To purify the body and realase toxins..

Here are two articles I found on it:
Using the Sauna/Sweat Bath
Sweat Lodge: Temazcal I/III - The Traditional Mexican Sweat Bath
Temazcal III/III -- Preparation of the Temazcal

--

I have only taken an introductory course on yoga at my wonderfull community college. It was mainly focused around Hatha. And, the point about staying in your comfort zone is correct. Your comfort zone should improve with practice, though.

Actualy, reviewing the concept of a sweat bath it has been used in many cultures and all have a very simualr meaning. To purify the body and realase toxins..

Yet another erroneous myth - saunas and steam baths do NOTHING to purify or release toxins.

An analysis was done on the perspiration released during a sauna and no "toxins" of any kind have been found. The composition is basically the same as ordinary sweat, almost all water with some sodium and trace minerals.

Actually, with the use of Niacin, which dialates the capillaries, one can sweat out toxins in the body, or so Im told. Could be complete bullshit, but im willing to believe it until it is debunked.
