Yoga Readings
    #1376530 - 03/14/03 05:24 PM (14 years, 12 days ago)

I was wondering if any of you could make some recommendations of good solid Yoga books. I went to Border's today and, being new to Yoga, was amazed at the number of books on the topic. Just curious if anyone has any certain titles that they were more than pleased with. I'd like to make this a part of my life. Thank you

Swami Vishnudevananda died a few years ago, and his book is out of print. See if you can get a used copy of his 'The Complete illustrated Book of Yoga' on BN.com or Amazon.com. I've used this teaching manual since 1974. ALSO, please do youreself a BIG favor and buy 'BE HERE NOW,' by The Lama Foundation (usually attributed to Ram Dass). This is THE most important book you can start with (I've been using it and its bibliography since 1973 when I began to practice Yoga). Shanti.

Iyengars (sp?) is the bible. I believe he was mixing tantric and hatha up a bit.

I second the be here now book. I had a chance to meet Ram at the rainbow gathering in Montana. He was much more humble than when he was charging $150 a seat to hear him speak in Seattle years before. He attributed that fact to the stroke that he had.......

Along with books, there is also a really good magazine called Yoga Journal that you might want to check out.  It's got some really awesome articles, as well as some beautiful pictures of different yoga poses.  This magazine is actually what first got me interested in doing yoga!

The first yoga book I ever got was called Body Harmony: the easy yoga exercise way, and it is pretty good for beginners.  It contains photos of all the basic yoga poses, as well as text on how to properly execute each pose and what the benefits of the pose are.  I found it at my local library, and I would highly suggest it if you are just starting out.

Yoga has begun to change my physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health in ways that I had never imagined!  It is a superb exercise, and I wish you luck in getting started!

Thank you all, I've been looking into all the suggestions that have been posted here and couldn't be more happy. I'll let you know how things go once I begin my practices
