In a nutshell....vortices of energy through which energy flows both in and out of the body. There are thousands of chakras in the body but most literature focuses on the 7 main ones starting from the bottom of the spine to the top of the head. An accupuncture point is a chakra.

So far I can only view my chakras with my 2 eyes closed, with my "third eye" sensing them. It's not "seeing" in the usual sense, but more of a mixture between seeing and feeling.

How about reading this work: "A Phenomenological Adaptation of the Tibetan Buddhist Doctrine of Psychic Centers to a Metatheoretical Hierarchy of Human Motivation." It reads a lot easier than its title, which was published by Microfilms International in 1983, 222 pages. It is my Ph.D. dissertation - I'll lend you a copy

An excellent book as an overall resource regarding the
7 chakras and auras is by Barbara Ann Brennan, entitled
Hands of Light ~ A Guide to Healing Through the Human
Energy Field. Published by Bantam Books

"Barbara Brennan is a practicing healer, psychotherapist and
scientist. She was a research scientist for NASA a the Goddard
Space Flight Center following her completion of her M.S. in
Atmospheric Physics from the University of Wisconsin."

I practice an energy healing modality by the name of Reiki, and
have found the latter text to be invaluable to my work.

As has been stated in this thread, there are many chakras in the
body. However, there are 7 major chakras beginning at the root
and terminating at the crown, and there are 21 minor chakras.

Root Chakra - Red - located @ the perineum (between the anus
and genitals)
Sacral Chakra - Orange - located just below the belly button in
approximation with the sacral area.
Solar Plexus Chakra - Yellow - locate midway between the belly
button and chest.
Heart Chakra - Green - located mid chest area
Throat Chakra - Blue - located in throat region
Forehead (3rd Eye) Chakra - Indigo - located just above and between eyes
Crown Chakra - Violet or White - locate at top of head.

The chakras have front and rear aspects, and govern specific areas of
the body. The chakras of the auric body have 3 main functions:

1.They bring energy into the auric body from the Universal Energy Field,
which in turn energizes the physical body.

2. They help develop self-conciousness.

3. They help transmit energy between auric levels

The body has 7 major chakras and also has 7 auric levels. Each auric level
has its own set of chakras. Energy is transmitted from each layer through
its set of chakras.

In understanding the location and function of the 7 main chakras, a
health professional can treat their client Holistically. Western medicine
traditionally treats physical symptoms and rarely looks at the cause of dis-ease
as a condition of the body, mind and soul.

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist. Routinely I find individuals who have
a structural imbalance, where their shoulders forward protracted, causing
a rounded upper back and subsequent muscular pain. A majority of these
individuals have had some sort of emotional pain, and the protracting of the
shoulders is common in protecting the heart chakra from further pain.

In having the knowledge of the chakras and how to treat them (Reiki), I can
not only attend to the physical pain and structural imbalances of my client, but
also deal with the balancing of the heart chakra. Thus treating my client in a
holistic fashion.

So you got this "knowledge" from a book or a Reiki teacher and they got it where? There is NO WAY to study chakras. In physiology, anyone can study the spine and come up with the same number of vertebrae. In Chakraology, people claim there to be anywhere from 0 to an infinite number of chakras depending on who you ask. So again, how can one "study" the chakras?

I can not only attend to the physical pain and structural imbalances of my client,
I think that is great!

but also deal with the balancing of the heart chakra. Thus treating my client in a
holistic fashion. Make sense?
No. It is impossible to measure the balance of a heart chakra before and after your treatment, nor to get any type of validation.
