No animals are used in the process, so BRF cakes would be considered kosher.

Unless, that is, you have a different definition of kosher.

Actually, defining something as kosher is rather complex. What is YOUR definition of it, and what are you looking for exactly? It doesn't always imply vegetarian as I initially thought. This is a reference to Jewish dietary guidelines, correct?

You need to be more specific as to what you're seeking in an answer.

meat can be kosher too, so i don't see why you thought that it meant vegetarian. there isn't much need to be more specific. mushrooms are kosher. the only time i could think of a mushroom not being kosher is during pesach if they are grown on some type of chometz. if you don't know what that sentence means, then it probably don't matter to you.

sure defining kosher is complex, but the question is rather straight forward. are they Kosher or not. nothing more specific needs to be said.

You're right, I guess I don't understand what kosher really means.

Good luck!

You are right, if we don't understand that sentence then it probably doesn't matter to us. Most non-Jews do not have a full understanding of "kosher". I myself do not. I do not know how many devote Jews frequent for forums but there are many non-Jews who would be willing to answer your question. They are just asking you to define "kosher" for them. No need to snap back at them.

Like I said, I have no understanding of the word kosher. I did a quick google search and from what I see there isn't an exact guideline (atleast not easy to put into words) what is kosher. Beef can be kosher but mixing beef and dairy is not kosher, etc. From what I can find, mushrooms do not contain and are not grown on anything that is not kosher. However I am unsure of the laws governing preparation of food or the mixing of various foods. If you can mix any non-meat and non-meat byproducts and still remain kosher, then yes, it is kosher.

If you want a more accurate answer, give me a link to a complete definition of Jewish dietary guidelines.

Well said, that's what I was trying to get out of them as well.

Specifically you thejonhill, don't come across as high and mighty to me if you can't perform the simple task of defining kosher in your own words to the general public.

Apparently we aren't in the "secret society", we just don't get it, and therefore shouldn't be invading their thread.    Be specific or don't reply, but your arrogance sucks.  This is a public message board after all, not a religious forum.

Shrooms are just as kosher as all other produce. All fruits and veggies and naturally growing food are kosher as long as they hasnt been processed in a nonkosher manufacturing facility.

I cant for the life of me imagine why you would be asking:

a) about BRF shrooms only, as that has nothing to do with it and
b) if they are kosher in the first place

If you keep kosher, then chances are you would know what is and isnt, otherwise you wouldnt be able to buy your own groceries. If you dont keep kosher, then why do you care?

I'm not Jewish, but that's fucked up man. Just wrong. The Kosher Laws are pretty detailed, and not really something that could be fully explained in a post, a link would have just been more easy.. True this isn't a religious forum, but this is a valid question.

He did answer the question, it just does not make much sense if you do not understand what he was referring to, and not being Jewish, I didn't so I plugged it into Google, and found that he is correct. Mushrooms are Kosher, with perhaps a time on Pesach, where it is forbidden to benefit from leaven (chametz), fermented, or leavened grains, and their products. Otherwise it would be fine. I could not find anything specific to growing things off cow/horse dung, though that might be subject to question also, as it is not a controlable factor. Ie. Blood on/in the dung, etc.. That's a debate I'm not getting into, as it really does not matter to me.. :P
