Mushroom trips pave an evolving emotional path leading you through different realms of awareness and understanding.

Acid trips turn you into the ball in the pinball machine of a fragmented reality.

Last time I did acid was six years ago - just didn't do it for me - always felt artificial, disconnecting and the come-downs were always like psychological torture - maybe it had a lot to do with where I was in my life, but the drug itself was a lot to blame. Whereas the after-effects of mushroom trips are always positive for me.

Also I like to see my psychedelic grow, rather than be sold to me by a drug dealer (not the nicest or most trustworthy of people - I fortunately haven't had to deal with one since giving up smoking dope last June) - I like the natural organic feel to mushrooms, you feel like you're being guided, rather than being thrown.

Each to their own I suppose, but I'm still anti-LSD and worried about the increase of its availability. Still think the jury's out on the long-term effects of this, still young drug.

I trip on shrooms about 10 times a year now - has been such a positive addition to my life in the past couple of years.

Okay, if you're only prepared to roll your eyes rather than critique or argue I'll illucidate:

I know my feelings on this matter won't be universally popular and it is just an opinion, based on my own experience and rationalisations. I'm glad I tried LSD

But...

My experiences on Acid were, in the long run, mainly negative. It kinda screwed up my life for a while, and I know a fair few people whose lives have been worse off due to taking acid - eg one friend ended up not leaving his flat for months and an old girlfriend had hallucinations and feelings of motion sickness for over a year.

There is a distinct difference between taking a substance prepared in a lab by people you don't know, you don't know exactly what is in it, is bought from drug dealer (how many are Chemists I wonder?) and is only just over 50 years old (no-one completely knows the long terms effects, this is still a young drug - the same goes for a lot of modern medicinal drugs)...

...to taking something which grows naturally, you have watched grow and has been used for centuries.

I'll take the natural over the synthetic any day.

Re: LSD/Mushroom Comparison [Re: theorganicdomino]

Honestly I think legit science has spent alot of time investigating LSD since it's discovery and, physiologically speaking, it is almost certainly safe.

Mentally speaking, it is probably no more dangerous than psilocybin.
The instances of genuine "psychosis" or LSD precipitated mental disorders excluding HPPD are extremely rare considering the widespread use of this drug. HPPD is possible from either drug.

When you buy your drugs from a dealer...there is always an opportunity for misrepresentation. That said, shrooms bought from a dealer are in some ways perhaps less safe than bought LSD. A "dried mushroom" can be many things, including a vessel for adequate amounts of another drug (this doesn't happen much).
A piece of blotter, the most common form of LSD, 1/4"x1/4", can contain CNS active levels of only a few potential drugs...LSD and it's analogs being among them. So, while blotter can hold other stuff, if you get psychedelic effects from 1 blotter, you almost certainly took LSD.

The argument that a "natural" drug is in anyway "safer" or "better" than a synthetic drug is utterly arbitrary. Synthetic psilocybin, when properly made, does not differ from psilocybin contained in a mushroom, and can provide the same kind of trip.
Tropanes found naturally in datura can be quite nasty to ingest, and other plants will kill you when you ingest them.
Whether your chemical is coming out of a lab or out of plant makes no difference to the end user if it is the same chemical. When you ingest a chemical that isnt normally in your body, it interacts with your system in complex ways that need to be gauged objectively, not with biases like "natural over the synthetic any day".
Objective testing of LSD has shown it to be safe for your body.

Anyways, LSD is structurally analogous/derived from natural compounds found in ergot fungus...

Nevertheless you are entitled to your opinion, even if it seems a bit arbitrary to me.

It probably is a subjective bias due to personal experience on my part.

More than anything I think I'm riffing on the all encompassing positive experiences mushrooms have given me as opposed to the negative ones I had on LSD and seeing what it did to several friends of mine - perhaps LSD is simply not for me.

I still hold my feelings re natural vs synthetic - the same would go with synthesised psilocybin - for me the whole process of tripping begins with when I start the process of homegrowing mushrooms and watching them grow.

I suppose it's a question of belief rather than science.

So, each to their own I say.

never taken acid (but that fateful day is just around the corner, im so excited!) I believe that your basing your negative views of acid on your own negative experiences and because of the negative experiences of those around you (and that is a totally valid observation and conclusion based on your observation). However I believe these negative effects could occur with any psychedelic substance. The causes of HPPD aren't known and occur after using different psychedelics not just acid. About your friend not leaving his flat I have no idea what you're on about there.

Blaming a psychedelic experience on the fact that your friend lacked the motivation or initiative to leave his flat seems to be a bit silly to me.

Furthermore I hate this natural vs synthetic argument. I'd rather take a heroic dose of the 'dangerous and synthetic' lysergic acid diethylamide than take some 'safe and natural' datura. I suppose i should ingest some black mamba venom as it's natural and therefore safe. (hehe ok that was just a stupid argument but my point is natural does not always equal safe).

True ancient cultures have been using mushrooms and mescaline containing cacti for thousands of years before us. Who's to say they didn't also have HPPD (I hope im getting the acronym right). Perhaps those who had persisting visions became shamans (due to their never ending contact with the spirit world).

LSD has had a LOT of unnofficial research done with it. I don't know of one person that has overdosed (physically) due to lsd. --Although an elephant given 300,000mics did die-- However John Griggs (Brotherhood of Eternal Love) overdosed on a large amount of synthesized psilocybin and died.

I suppose this coincides with your synthesised vs natural safety argument but seeing as psilocybin occurs naturally and is the more toxic of the two you could say that mushrooms are in fact more dangerous than acid. (This is a ridiculous argument however as the amounts of mushrooms needed to be ingested to reach the amount of psilocybin that griggs overdosed on would be impossible to ingest).

I understand your concerns but believe them to be without any real foundation (apart from your own negative experiences that -from what i understand- don't really prove lsd to be unsafe, just psychedelic experiences generally to have a lasting effect on people) I believe that much more research must be done into ALL the substances we ingest.

To be anti-LSD is a very un-enviable position to hold here on these boards especially when you say things like 'it's increased availability' you're going to get some people angry  It's like your teasing all of us without acid by saying hey I can get it and you can't and i want to stop this cursed chemical from spreading. - hehe some might interpret it that way.

Thought I made it clear that I was backtracking....

Look, as I said at the start, I know this opinion is not going to be popular and I'm fine to admitt that it has more to do with my experiences and beliefs than scientific rational argument.

I have a belief in naturally growing psychedelics as gifts from the earth - rather than seeing it on a body chemical interface level it is important to me that what I consume grows naturally. I am also a vegetarian, grow my own vegetables, bake my own bread, eat as many whole foods as possible and I no longer smoke anything, drink alcohol or caffeine or eat refined sugars.

A lesson I learned long ago from mushrooms was that it is very important what we put into our bodies.

I am not puritanical about it - people can choose to experiment with whatever substances they want - having done so in the past I would be a hypocrite to suggest otherwise. I am totally for freedom of choice and drug experimentation has been a vitally important aspect ofmy life.

And as for my friend - he could not leave his flat, he was scared to death to leave his flat, petrified about leaving his flat. I have never seen anyone so frightened in all my life!

Okay, I'm probably carrying emotional baggage around and have bad associations with LSD. I just felt like voicing my opinion - one which I feel passionately about.

My experiences have caused me to have concern about LSD - as with any good debate on a message board the replies have helped me to contemplate how I feel about the issue.

To each their own...

haha ease up with the aggression! His wishes of it not being so widespread don't affect any of us personally. I doubt this has any effect whatsoever on the supply and demand of lsd :p

It just means this one person preffers the natural over the synthetic for his own reasons. It just means he won't be carrying the beacon of lsdlight and spreading the word of this substance.

The rest of the folk that love the substance can do that just fine. And have been doing so for so many years!

Although the anti-lsd viewpoint seems a bit wrong (IMO) but it's not like theorganicdomino has any choice in the matter - just won't recomend it to his friends i suppose. I just hope that if lucy calls them they will find it (or lucy will find them) with no trouble.

For me shrooms are all I can get my hands on. And there is something to be said for cultivating your own materials. You know there's no bad shit in there! By the way I e-mailed Bruce Eisner, the one who wrote that article. He wrote me back promptly. He was nice and answered my questions. He was friends with Tim Leary and other scholarly trippers of that era. I asked him if a high dose of shrooms would be anything like a Sandoz hit. He just said it would be different.

Re: LSD/Mushroom Comparison [Re: vanner]

You know I just read this entire post and the funny thing is that the only truly verifiable scientific psychic difference between LSD and mushrooms was not mentioned! That is one of trip duration. In case anyone doesn't know, a mushroom trip lasts about half as long as an acid trip, and when you are tripping, that extra 4 or 6 hours can be a LONG ass time. So, here's a little story of me and psychedelics... and I'll get to the difference of LSD and mushrooms at the end.

When I was about 10 years younger, I used to have intensely terrible trips on shrooms. I mean so bad that I would put them in the class of pure mental torture. I would get incredibly nauseated but, although I desperately tried, could not vomit no matter what I shoved down my throat (it seemed like my finger could just go down as far as I could shove it and have little effect other than making my throat clench up). I would often grow completely delusional and not understand concepts like space and time, turning me into nothing more than a dysfunctional schizo. I would often be paralyzed in pain, both physical and mental. I believe what was happening was a sort of panic attack that led to persistent and sever nausea combined with some sort of hypersensitivity to the mushrooms that led to a psychotic state.

Yet, my love of growing mushrooms, my curiosity, and my willingness to try them again and again, would bring me back to them almost every year! Imagine, if you will, being in a car wreck because you were drunk and then going out and drinking again and driving... again and again. I still don't know exactly why I kept with them. Something inside me told me that they were very important, so I stuck with growing them and trying them from time to time only to endure more nausea and torture.

About five years ago something happened to me that changed everything. My body grew much bigger from working out. I was medicated for depression. I was heavily medicated with beta blockers for hypertension (which would have otherwise probably killed me by now). Beta blockers also reduce panic and anxiety reactions which may explain something about the change. Anyway, unexpectedly my feelings tripping totally turned around in the course of about three years. It went from torture to pure euphoria! Last time I tripped, I ate 40-50 wet grams and the only feeling I got was like some cosmic sex and a direct link to God himself with wonderful visuals. Today mushrooms are a pleasure, an ecstasy really, that I reserve for a few times a year, and each time it's better than the last. I don't even get sick to my stomach a tiny bit! What exactly happened? I don't know. I don't really care either. I feel as if somehow I knew all those years that one day I would enjoy shrooms like I do today as a special pleasure reserved for very special occasions.

So going back to LSD vs. shrooms: I have also tried LSD, both in my youth and recently. LSD never made me sick like mushrooms, but I also have never tripped real hard on acid for some reason (probably got weak stuff). Acid wore me out from exhaustion. I mean after 8-12 hours, I got tired of grinding my teeth and smiling like a buffoon. I did not notice any difference in the type of hallucinations. I never "lost it" (i.e. delusion to the point I am basically raving like some lunatic) with acid like I have with shrooms. I never felt like acid was as spiritual as shrooms. I certainly didn't feel connected with God with acid, more connected with my own self I'd say. Having said all of that, I took acid four times while I've taken shrooms countless times, so I am not the best source on this one probably. All I know is that I cannot imagine acid will ever give me the pure euphoria that I have today on shrooms. Maybe there is something to be said about growing ones mushrooms, a hobby I find very rewarding. All that mental energy put into seeing a microscopic spore to a full-grown shroom connects one, I believe, to the resultant trip in a way that buying a blotter cannot.

Woah!

If you'd read the through-line of the postings you'd have noticed that I backtracked stating that I realised that where I was coming from was based of subjective opinions based on my own experience.

How could I not have an anti-LSD feeling from my experience and from my beliefs regarding the spiritual qualities of plant entheogens - which for that matter probably have more right to be called 'gifts from above' than something synthesised in a lab.

I was glad of the replies which made me contemplate the issue and actually changed my mind - your angry response in the face of me being humble and backing down seems a little mean spirited.

If I pissed you off I'm sorry...

...but I'm still pro-mushrooms and anti-LSD, just the same as a mate of mine whose dad was an alcoholic is totally against alcohol.

I liked both acid and shrooms, but I can certainly understand the disillusionment with acid; if its not strong enough, its boring and a waste of time; same can be said for the seeds. If its too strong about all you can do is ride it out and wonder when its going to end... Shoomies on the other hand are rarely boring!
Here's a link you might like to check out sometime; however, my experience has been that the colors and effects of anything on TV, video games or the computer is disappointing while tripping; maybe I'm really color blind and just too stupid to realise it!!! LOL!!!

Supposedly mushrooms are much more spiritual and philoshophical than acid, which is more of a recreational drug.

I agree with you for the most part. The only difference is that both are very spiritual for me. I've actually had more impactful spiritual trips from lucy. I think that different hal's are spiritual for different people.

Alot of what you said is very true.

Comparing LSD and mushrooms, to use the age-old adage, is like comparing apples and oranges. Each have their pro's and con's, some moreso than others, but as a whole they are each perfect in their respective sense.

Preferences for either are entirely subjective. My advice is to do both, get a feel for them, and take it from there.

And the sad thing is to compare them is to judge the experience... But I think about it too and what I think about them doesn't involve pros and cons... it is about what each substance does to my consciousness, perception and cognition.

Hi everyone, rather than start a new topic thought i would post this here

Ive taken Mushrooms on numerous occasions back when they used to be legal in the Uk, and done lsd a few times recently.

With mushrooms i mainly took them in open, natural spaces, and a few time with close mates in their houses. This was from the ages of around 17-19

With Lsd every time i have had it has been at a rave, either a festival or a club. 1 tab, or 1 drop each time. From 21-22.

Ive so far found mushrooms to be much more illuminating, to give me a really mindblowing and interesting state of mind, while with lsd, as much as ive found it to be fun, its felt a little less natural, and a lot more like im just having a laugh and seeing trippy colours. (apart from bits of one experience near the end of the year)

Set and setting is supposed to be incredibly important so maybe the raves are not the best places to take the substances? Or at least are leading to the sort of feelings im having? How much do you think this can change the experience?
Also ive only ever done 1 tab or 1 drop of lsd, while with shrooms i have expereinced much higher doses, whats your opinions on dosage in regards to experiences had?
