Smarter u r, more likely u r to get Depressed...
    #3575376 - 01/03/05 03:23 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Ever noticed this ?
Some of the smartest people I know are, or can get, extreemely
depressed. In my own family I have the highest I.Q. - not that
that's a good indicator of being "smart" - a highly subjective
idea in any case). But i've noticed that my mom and dad r just
too dumb to get depressed - like Homer Simpson ! they're logic
is twisted and they can't even seem to concentrate on something
long enough to get depressed...

If you believe that depression is a sign of intelligence, then this should make you happy. Or, knowing that you're smart, you could feel crappy because you know its your "destiny" to be unhappy.

Anyway, lucid, do you mean depressed as in clinical depression or as in being down?

"17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow." ecclesiastes ch.1 vs 17-18 KJV.

I think this is a generalization, but it has been true for me at times. I think sometimes what's depressing about having great knowledge and intelligence is not being able to apply it properly.

I agree that the smarter you are, the more likely you are to have a brain disorder.  Depression is a symptom of a brain disorder.

To wit:

Rapid Expansion Led to Better Human Brains

The first study of genes that build and operate the brain shows that humans underwent a unique period of rapid brain expansion that endowed them with a special form of intelligence not shared by any other animal, according to University of Chicago researchers.

The colossal leap forward grew the human brain to three or four times the size of that of a chimpanzee - man's closest genetic relative - when body sizes are equalized.  That pushed human intelligence over the threshold of basic instincts and into an unparalleled realm of cognition, self-awareness and consciousness.

"We tend to think of our species as categorically different, being on top of the food chain, "  said University of Chicago geneticist Bruce Lahn.  "There is some justification for that."

The dark side is that some of the genes that make for a bigger and better brain may also be the ones that predispose people to mental disorders and addiction.

Learning more about what happens when these genes go wrong could lead to new prevention strategies and treatments.

Reporting in Wednesday's issue of the journal Cell, Lahn and his colleagues, Eric Valender and Steve Dorus, found that 17 brain-building genes mutated at a tremendously rapid rate in humans, compared with the brains of chimpanzees, macaque monkeys, rats and mice.

In a species that was social and cooperative but had few other survival skills, being smarter meant a lot to early humans, said Lahn.

Genetic mutations that enhanced intelligence amid the pressure to survive were quickly passed on to future generations.  Those not possessing the new genes eventually died off.

Once started, the selection of brain-building genes snow-balled, resulting in thousands of changes to thousands of genes in a relatively short period, Lahn said.

"Humans evolved their cognitive abilities not due to a few accidental mutations, but rather from an enormous number of mutations acquired through exceptionally intense selection favoring more complex cognitive abilities," he said.

Lahn, also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the University of Chicago, argues that the evolutionary forces that led to the big brain continue to act on humans today and are likely to produce better brains in the future.

That article was copied from The Houston Chronicle.  It was in print last week, but I can't give you a link.  I brought the paper home with me.  If I want to find it online, because it is already archived, they want me to pay money for it.  :frown:

You will just have to take my word for it that it was re-typed in its entirety.

Disorder... difference in operation you mean. As I observe my surroundings, it is very hard to find any human being that seems 'normal' (free of 'disorders').

Intelligent people are much more capable of convincing themselves to believe an unsupported, seperating illusion... :smirk:

I don't see a link between intelligence and depression.

I wouldn't be too suprised if there was a correlation between intelligence and depression. The more I know the less happy I am.

I find the smart ones can get depressed if they become self-critical a few times per hour, whether they get what they want or not.

I find the dumb ones can get depressed when they don't get what they want, at which point they become self-critical.

as if the smarter ones keep checking on their own performance and the others are too busy.

personally I fall into the dumb ones category by virtue of not being depressed, but I maybe have a lower standard that I am measuring against, or maybe I am measuring fewer things.

The trick to being intelligent and avoiding depression is to be an egomaniac without being a perfectionist.

I used to think this about my own parents... I think everyone believes themselves to be smarter than their parents. be careful with this though, the perceived dumberness could actually be just a very different way of thinking (which can be interpreted as 'twisted logic'). I think sometimes the 'older generation' can be intimidated by the 'younger generation' and therefore act in a certain way, which we (the 'younger generation') can interpret as dumbness.

get your parents talking about stuff which excites them, which they know about. I always find myself trying to impress my parents with my worldliness or something, which makes them hold back.

Deep thinking can bring to light tragedies others overlook. Sure, intelligent people can battle with depression more than others.

I used to think that way, but I realized that it's just not worth it to be depressed. Why be depressed when you can be happy? If you're seriously miserable, then use your brain and think of a way to make things better. It'd be an awful shame to keep living life that way..

I think if there was any link it would be found in those that THINK they are intelligent just because they over analyze things. By over analyzing one can cause themselves to be depressed.

I think that the type of depression of which Lucid is speaking is the kind caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, not by external events. There is usually no reason for this kind of depression.
