I disagree
the fact that I use a fork when I eat or speak english has nothing to do with the way I view the world.
I use a fork because it's less messy than eating with my hands.
I speak english because it's how I learned to communicate.
using a fork doesn't make me like spaghetti or BBQ chicken any less than if I ate them without it.
using english to communicate my ideas doesn't make those ideas different than if I had learned japanese.

language enables and simultaneously restricts communication, not thought.

our brains only have so much capacity to recall linguistic information. it would be impossible to have a word for every single thing in existence. language focuses our consciousness in a different sector of the brain, one that is confined to symbols.

this language argument is pointless because im not going to say that we shouldn't have language i just think that people should realize the impact of language on our consciousness.

language is a learned behavior and i believe that people with different languages see the world differently.

as I said, if this were true, no thought would be incommunicable, because we would all think in known symbols. "language".
consciousness isn't "focused" anywhere.
are you not conscious in a non-linguistic way of your own pain when you injure yourself?
at that moment are you thinking "oh, that's pain"
I'm sure not.
I'm reacting to consciousness of something which has nothing to do with words at the time.
when one deconstructs one's language and culture to the point that one arrives upon some sort of "realization" that can't be put into words, is that "thinking in symbols"? it's the exact opposite. it's removing oneself from those symbols

exactly. the syntax has to be known by more than one person and we werent born with knowledge of words. however facial gestures and sound volume of spoken communication is something we are born with.

proper language is learned behavior, obviously, but I think the urge for communication with others may be somewhat instinctual in our species

actually in my college level psychology class we were taught that facial gestures are programed into our brain. it is a product of evolution. the ability to recognize if someone is hostill or not. maybe what they teach us in college is completely wrong? i dunno.

actually it is somewhat proven. we were shown a video where a guy had his corpus collosum cut and he was shown a picture of a person's face made out of vegetables. his right and left eye were only able to see the right and left half of the face respectively and he was only shown one side at a time. i dont remember which side it was but when they showed him one side he said he saw a bunch of vegetables. when they showed him the other side he said he saw a human face. what this proves is that our ability to decifer the human face resides in one of the halves of our brain meaning that we are programed to know what a human face is supposed to look like and what different expressions mean.
