Imagination is more powerful than Knowledge?
    #3574543 -

My philosophy professor told me today that when Einstein said that imagination is more powerful than knowledge, he was totally wrong, because a scientist's job is to get rid of the imagination to give room for logical reasoning only.

Apparently, imagination is used primarily by writers and drawers and stuff like that, but never by scientists, scientists do not need imagination.

Okay so at first i laughed in his face, because it was the first time i heard someone say that Einstein was wrong. But here i think my professor was stating that he was wrong in his use of the english language.

So if imagination is only a form of copy and paste of reality, then can imagination really be creative like Eisntein said it was? (i think that's what he meant)

Well, is there a difference between imagination and knowledge? We rely on our teachers and friends to show us the world, but they are only showing it to us through their own perception. Perception is what hallucinogenics are all about.

We use what we feel are logical conclusions in order to act in our everday lives. But we always have to remember that our reality is subjective, and there are very few finite truths.

Now, we need to take from our reality to make our imagination. Without experience, we cannot have anything to fall back on. So our imagination is a reflection of our reality. But our reality is subjective, so it really is your own personal reality.

This also gets into whether or not you know someone and such, and whether or not your sould exists before it's in a body...things we have a very hard time speculating on. I believe that there are definitive truths, but it's hard when it comes to the unknown.

My guess is he was talking about this quote:

I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

It was Einsteins imagination that allowed him to conceive the impossibility that matter and energy are the same thing; that space and time can bend.

> a scientist's job is to get rid of the imagination to give room for logical reasoning only

Yes, most non-scientists do not understand the job of a scientist. A scientist's job is to apply the scientific method in order to prove or disprove a hypothesis. A hypothesis, which is a guess as to why something happens, comes from observation and imagination. The application of the scientific method requires logical reasoning, but is meaningless without a hypothesis. A hypothesis requires imagination to conceive, but is also meaningless without logical reasoning.

Perhaps your professor would do well to ponder the following, also by Einstein:

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

It was Einsteins imagination that allowed him to conceive the possibility that matter and energy are the same thing; that space and time can bend.

According to my professor, Einstein could not have possibly come up with that with his imagination. When you imagine, you just associate things and mix things up in your mind. You don't come up with something new and real with imagination.
He said that since Einstein had thoroughly studied math and physics, he was intelligent enough to realize that there were problems in how scientists of his days viewed the universe. Formulas, theories and such didn't add up. So this would supposively have been the source of his search for a new way to approach physics, a search that revolutionized the world.

Perhaps your professor would do well to ponder the following, also by Einstein:

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I hate these useless comparisons.

Imagination and knowledge go hand-in-hand. Einstein wouldn't have come up with anything if it wasn't for his knowledge. Likewise, he wouldn't have come up with anything GOOD if it wasn't for his imagination.

Your professor is dabbling in sophistry. Tell him to lay off the redux and think more about sex.
