Morality
    #3561967 - 12/30/04 03:19 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

A question came to me recently, and well, where one question starts another follows. So, after pondering things for a little while, I've come to ask a few questions of the S&P, or at least those with ideas about morality.

What are your morals?
How did you come to accept those morals?
How do you act when presented with differing morality?
What would cause you to alter (or annihilate) your morals?

My first post didn't really answer the questions, so I revised it.

My morals are complicated, but to put them simply,

1. I believe that self preservation is not about me, it's about viewing the whole world as myslef and prioritizing my life accordingly.

2. I arrived at these morals after seeking my own self interest for a while and feeling unfulfilled or incomplete.

3. Since my morals are founded in the idea that we all belong to each other, I make a conserted effort not to criticize other peoples views, but instead I try to harmonize them with mine.

4. I feel that my overall morals are pretty sound, but when it comes to specific moral questions, they can and do change. Usually my morals change as the result of some expirience that causes me to question my values.

My political beliefs and moral beliefs are closely related. Politically, I'm a libertarian. I believe that one should not initiate force against others, only respond to it with defensive or in some cases retaliatory force. I apply this libertarian principle of non-intervention to my daily life. I also believe in minding one's own business. I will gladly give generously to others, but will not force others to be generous as well. I believe that each person has their own agenda which works for them, and is not a concern to me unless that agenda involves the initiation of force upon others.

What are your morals?

well, i believe morals are totally relative, good and bad dont exist except subjectively. however i still have my own subjective morals and i follow them. basically i believe in sharing when you can, helping others when you can, never initiating force to change a person, and i absolutely demand respect of my right to choose my own lifestyle. i believe in judging people only for there actions and not there race, relgion, ethnicity, sex preferance etc. the only acts i consider immoral are those that harm other people for profit of any kind.

"How did you come to accept those morals?"

a combination of soul seeking and programming, but mostly programming by society and my parents. But i dunno some of it just evolved some how.

How do you act when presented with differing morality?

quite well depending. well actually i dunno. like i said i respect choice so i have no problem hanging with some crazy people, drud dealers, promiscuos fags, junkies, thieves, even violent crazies, these people dont bother me.

in fact the only ones that really get under my skin are evaneglists and those who look down on others.

What would cause you to alter (or annihilate) your morals?

any of a million things. an experience that shed new light on my beliefs. a solid logical argument. even a dream or trip might do it.

i think morals are like opinions

everybody has one or twelve

they all tend to be contradictory mumbo jumbo

i have a bad opinion of morals in general, becuase from what i have come to learn is that usually "morals" are when people whom consider themselves better than others, try to enforce their own beliefs unto others, christains, for example.

yeah see no ones morals are absolutely righ, like the guy above said there just oppinions. but you cant live without having any oppinions (unless youve achieved the 73 degrees of akashic enlightenment and the third plateau of the buddhas serenity) so the best you can do is just learn to respect other peoples oppinions . its the only way to avoid frusteration and rage

heres the hard part... ready?

this means that what george bush is doing is just as 'right' as what you, or ghandi did or do.

its true. i hate the man, oh how i hate him, and oh how i mourn for his victimes but... my oppinions and his man. neither of us are god, and neither of us are wrong/right.

Morals is just a lame word for respect.

Respect the livelihood of your brothers and sisters and morals will no longer be needed.

"Morals is just a lame word for respect."

cant say that makes sense to me. morals more often than not are used as justification for DIS respect.

my morals tell me god wants you dead so i dont respect your right to life.

my morals tell me your a sinner, fag, so i dont respect your right to lifestyle.

My morals tell me your a blasphemer, philosopher, so i dont respect your right to free thinking.

etc

etc

etc

"Morals" are the conditioned summation of what society deems acceptable and needs to be respected to maintain the "image" of what humanity ought to appear as. Which is why plants and gay marriage are illegal. Its a lame and primitive mode of thought.

"Are you saying disrespect is wrong?"

Disrespect is immoral, respect is moral.
Dishonesty is immoral, honesty is moral.
Using drugs is immoral, being sober is moral.
Being an aetheist is immoral, being a Baptist is moral.

Why is this so hard to understand folks?

I agree. I live by the morality embodied by the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I would prefer, "Don't do unto others as you hope they don't do unto you."

Do unto others sounds like someone is doing something to someone else, like perhaps imposing their laws, values or morals on them.

Leave me alone, and I will leave you alone.
