Splitting S&P - (Survey)
    #3508830 - 12/16/04 01:27 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

The idea has been proposed by several parties to split the Spirituality and Philosophy forum into separate subforums. It has also been proposed that the Science and Technology forum is also returned to this party, which would make the realm of Science, Spirituality, and Philosophy.. one forum with three distinct and separate subforums.

Philosophy would stay with the current guidelines, Spirituality gets a more restrictive set of rules, basically: "you can express your opinion about others belief systems but they are not subject for direct confrontation with the intention to put to ridicule, reduce, flame or offend any of the intervinient members beliefs". In other words, philosophy would be the place to debate and argue beliefs and ideas.. spirituality would be the place to share your experiences and beliefs in an open environment without debate.

Please note that this is just in the hypothetical-information-gathering stage right now and the results of the poll does not neccessarily reflect what the outcome will be. We would just like to get an idea of what the S&P regulars think about the idea.

What do you think about splitting S&P?
You may choose only one

It should also be noted that we are considering splitting Science and Technology.. as it has seemingly been overrun by "technology" posts.. the idea is to move "Science & Theory" over here as a subforum, and leave "Technology and Computers" where it is.. that way the science forum will be a place for actual science discussion.

I assume you're allowing discussion of this here since you left the thread unlocked, so a question: How does a subforum function compared to a regular forum? It is shown as branched off of its parent forum on the Main Index or what?

P.S. The mods have taken a beating lately over the "tur-banned one" frenzy, so let me take this opportunity to say I appreciate all you do to keep this place working! And asking for input is always appreciated.

A subforum functions the exact same as a regular forum it just does not appear as a "whole forum" in the main index

For an example of this look at the "Mushroom Archive" under Mushroom Cultivation.

It would function in a similar way as this.. in that you would come into the main forum titled "Science, Spirituality & Philosophy".. or whatever we name it.. and then you would see the list of the three separate subforums. You wouldn't be able to post in the "Science, Spirituality & Philosophy" forum, that would just be the gateway to one of the three subforums. It's just branches from a parent forum in order to be more organized and specialized.

I vote for splitting science and technology. I think this forum should be for spiritual, philisophical, scientific, and other posts that baffle the mind. To seperate them without a common area would only limit conversation, and therefor limit our learning.

I could care less about the newest version of Windows though. Tell the tech forum to go fuck itself

I would also like to say that I do not have time to browse 3 forums in place of 1. It may organize things a bit, but I think it will leave some people in the dark. People will be drawn to one more than the others, and there will be conflicts because of post content, and other BS.

Maybe I am an idiot though. But to me, S&P is the last sacred place at the shroomery, and I would hate to see it change into something that it is not. This is my home.

And on another note. We talk about science anyways. Dont ban science talk from entering S&P, but I wouldnt openly invite the other forum in.

lol thanks.

Maybe it's just because I watched "Gandhi" last night, but I voted for a united S&P. I really think that splitting the forum would be a big mistake. Both camps contribute something worthwhile and thought-provoking *to each other*, if you ask me.

That's a really stupid idea. Philosophy and spirituality go hand in hand.

The only thing is, I wish people would keep the science-oriented posts in the actual Science and Technology forum. That forum would be a lot more fun if people actually discussed science there instead of just computer stuff.

If you are going to split S&P you might make a REAL Science forum as well.

I really don't think splitting the S&P forum is necessary, the main reason that has come up is because Swami was banned. As no one has any real reasons for his banning, it was assumed it was his posting style, so those unhappy about his banning seemed to suggest a fluffy New Age spirituality forum and a logical debate of philosophy forum, but I think it was in a partially sardonic form

A science and theories forums could be incorporated into this philosophy forum- perhaps make it Philosophy and Science, as spirituality is really assumed under the category of philosophy, and then make the other forum Technology and Computers.

Along those same lines I think seperate Spirituality, Science/Philosophy, and Technology/Computers forums would be the best idea.

What would be the difference between the philosophy and spirituality forums? Philosophy and spirituality describe mostly the same thing, a post that could go in the spirituality forum could probably go in the philosophy forum, and vice versa

Keep S&P as it is and strictly enforce the existing rules for everyone.

Alright everyone stay calm
It was just an idea and that's the reason for this post.. to see what everyone thinks

I think we are definitely going to be splitting the science and tech forum into-
Science and Theory
Technology and Computers

I think the Science and Theory forum could be very well incorporated into a Philosophy forum. For example:

Philosophy and Science
Here you discuss religious, spiritual and philosophical concepts, along with new scientific discoveries and theories, in order to help understand the universe around us

Technology and Computers
Here you discuss the newest computer, electronical and technological innovations and creations, along with new medical technology and discoveries.

Just a thought, but it would seem best to split science and technology, such as the newer scientific discoveries like dark matter and quantum physics, from the forum for man-made technologies like computers, medicines and automotive innovations

Yes.. splitting Science and Technology seems like the best choice to make.. so are you proposing we merge Philosophy and Science into one subforum here or just merge it with S&P?

Hey Shroomism-

i liked it when it was SPS(or was it SSP?) It must've been a while cause I can't even remember.

Science was awesome to have involved and I hated the split. Actually, come to think of it...I have visited S&P way way less after that split.

It's better when "All is One."

But i know what you guys were going for....sounds to me like the old OTD/Pub split...a land of harshness and a land of love..    It sure does make things easier...but I think it would be detrimental to S&P(hopefully adding another S soon). That kinda thing doesn't hurt random discussion(OTD/Pub), it only prevents drama.

So i'll stop babbling now...but I want no split, pls.
