Community Property
    #3461077 - 12/07/04 08:07 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

One trait that I have seen exhibited a lot on this forum is putting up a thread professing one's philosophy, and then getting angry when everyone does not see it's wisdom. Many times have I been told or seen other's told that they should not reply on such and such thread. These people want to preach their wisdom, but not test it in the crucible of debate. Taking any of this personal is futile. You cannot quote and preach and expect others to unquestioningly agree with your thoughts as if you were the very Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus, Pope, or Dali Llama upon an ivory throne. All threads are owned by the Shroomery which is a community of free thinking individuals, not by the poster. If my thread soon turns to waterskiiing or gnomes then so be it!!! I released it into the wild and it must be allowed to grow...even if that growth turn crooked. I am not referencing any one example, but a trend that I have noticed.

The most important thing to remember is this......... Do not put your past experiences into another person's post and you will not suffer from such things.

and

Making assumptions is dangerous

The test of true intelligence is this....... To be able to hold two ideas in your head and still function with objectivity

I have not mastered that but I understand it. I wrote it.

Put what you will into this thread, brother, as I enjoy spirited conversation and debate. Free thought means no restrictions. Not free as in beer, but free as in speech...as they say in the Linux community.

Terrorist fairies are pretty radical too.

What about the guy who sticks his hand up his butt and pulls out pieces of corn?

The really nice thing about corn is that after you poop it out you can just clean it, heat it up and eat it again,

I think that generally, you are right on this; however, there are boundaries on the flow of the topic. Most notably, of course, the forum rules and the general description of the forum itself.

And, of course, the fact that an individual thread does have a general, intended flow of discussion as well - even if that is no general intention at all. What would be the point of starting a thread on astral projection to have everyone immediately start discussing communion?

When a thread goes in a different direction it is useless to demand that the readers get on subject or leave. I often find that people want to use a thread as a way of forcing others to see their viewpoint while trying to suppress the opposing views...which don't work. If you agree it is "I love you", but if you disagree they say "Discussing that is not the purpose of my thread! So, get back on topic!" ("agreeing with ME of course" happens to be the intended topic on such threads)

Ja, I understand what you mean. Often times a thread will start out about one thing and will lead onto discussion on a related topic.... It is interesting to watch this happen, and I have no problems with this at all.

I'm simply referring to completely pulling a thread off-topic, in a negative way..... I have no problems with a quick joke session or whatnot... but no bringing personal shit in from outside the thread, ya know?

Don't get me wrong...I like to see a thread I started move in a direction that allows me to expound upon what a wonderful fellow I am and other such self-aggrandizing notions, but if it goes another way, well that's cool too.

I fear you already know quite a bit more about me than any of my coworkers and quite a few of my real life friends. I also guess that you really know that I am the asshole my real life friends suspect I am.

I don't eat much corn, but I once saw a piece of miraculously undigested hot dog in "the mix" so to speak. Now you know a bit more...
