US Retains Control of the Internet
    #4369849 - 07/04/05 06:10 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Partial Reprint of an Article from July 2, 2005, Guardian Newspapers -

"The Bush administration has decided to retain control over the principal computers which control internet traffic in a move likely to prompt global opposition, it was claimed on Friday.

The United States had pledged to turn control of the 13 computers known as root servers -- which inform web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct internet traffic -- over to a private, international body.

But on Thursday the US reversed its position, announcing that it will maintain control of the computers because of growing security threats and the increased reliance on the internet for global communications. A Japanese government official on Friday criticised the move, claiming it will lend momentum to the debate about who controls the information flow online.

"When the internet is being increasingly utilised for private use, by business and so forth, there is a societal debate about whether it's befitting to have one country maintaining checks on that ... It's likely to fuel that debate," said Masahiko Fujimoto, of the ministry of internal affairs and communications' data communications division.

The computers serve as master directories that contain government-approved lists of the roughly 260 suffices used, such as .com or .co.za. Anyone who uses the web interacts with them every day. But a policy decision by the US could, at a stroke, make all sites ending in a certain suffix unreachable..."

Comments as to the ethics and possible implications of this, anyone?

The US Army created the Internet. Those servers are US property. I see no wrong doing or conflict here.

Hue, didn't you say you support file swapping of music even in violation of copyright ownership? Don't you like the Linux open architecture concept?

Do not assume that I think the U.S. should give up ownership of the servers. I do think given the size and scope and power of the Internet, other countries might just want the U.S. to have an international agreement as to Internet traffic, policy and content. The fact that the U.S. had said they would have such an agreement, and now have backed away from that position in favor of continued control surely is the source of potential conflict with other countries.

"Don't you like the Linux open architecture concept?"

I am a Gentoo Linux and FreeBSD user and programmer. I am a firm believer in the inherant freedom of information. In principle I agree that there should be international agreements as to the regulation of Internet content. We should definitely share certain types of information technology in an open way, but other countries should also innovate. As it stands most of the true innovation comes from the US and the the other countries share our technology. Linux is the only non-US technology (it is international in origin) that has innovatied in any real way. If the Internet is to be communal property the technology should be shared both ways not only one way. Anytime I see my country relinquish our technology I cannot help but feel that the exchange is usually one sided.

I hear lots of people dis the US (perhaps justifiably), but I rarely hear anyone thank us for GPS, HST, the Panama Canal, the Internet...

I think the internet is the ultimate (depends on your belief of the 'endtime') human evolution. It's almost like condensed, synthetic 'experience' at times.

I had read this report, and am glad others have too. Bush, the NWO, Bilderberg, etc. really are capable of taking over cyberspace. What are we going to do?

Thank you for pointing out the obvious. Of course the problem is "property", the notion that property has to exist on every creation, or the sense something has to belong exclusively to someone, is what makes mankind revolve its guts with this capitalist shit inside.

That same shit is revolving inside people with AIDS. If there were not courageous countries, like South Africa, to abolish this "proprietary" sense with AIDS medication, much more thousand of deaths would be reported.

Many more examples about "property" can make you think about its role on mankind evolution and de-evolution, most conquest and wars are fought in the name of property. The battle of Troy was fought in the name of the property of a woman, the WWII was started in the name of the property of a race over another.

Property is the sign of men incapability to share its resources. This US decision about the internet - which is a such important resource for mankind - only justifies this fact.

"the notion that property has to exist on every creation, or the sense something has to belong exclusively to someone, is what makes mankind revolve its guts with this capitalist shit inside."

Well, what do you suggest? You denounce capitalism, but communism has had no success in the world. Have you relinquished control of all your physical property? Can anybody take your car out when they want? Do you share your house with homeless persons because they lack a place to stay? What about your computer...can I have it? I have a greater need...I thought so...

Communism never existed. Opression and control (which was one of the trademarks of former systems that called themselfs communism or socialism) is not in the description of true communism.

Real communism existed only in rare parts of the world, like Star City in russia where astronauts lived without any money, everyone worked, and shared everything. Then there were hippie settlements where they shared everything and worked together.

We should at least try communism for size before we say it doesn't work.

It is too easily corrupted. Read "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. Even China is moving towards capitalism now to avoid the same fate faced by the former Soviet Union. There are some socialist ideas that are good, like socialized medicine, but total communism cannot be made to work on a country sized scale.

I suggest nothing. Neither capitalism or communism are capable of sustaining the future of mankind.
Capitalism was a good system for fast development in the beginning of the 20th century. Communism was a failed test to harmonize resources with society.
There's no perfect system and it will never be as long people don't share the same universal values. But the fact is, mankind is evolving so fast that now is the time to stop and think if this old capitalist/communist systems are to be followed any longer.
I don't think we should go any faster - as competitiveness in the capitalist system want us to go - , we should go all together ...

"Property is the sign of men incapability to share its resources."

Do you find it true or false ?

well how do you know it can get corrupted if it was never tested in its true form?

And as for the t-shit slogan..

Has capitalism killed less people? When you add up all the people that died from wars (including from nazism), electric chairs, and starvation, I'm sure you end up with the same number.

How many have died because of capitalism in the past few years (Iraq victims, and victims of 9.11.)

Communism can't be tested in its true form because it goes counter to human nature. As long as there are people with ambition, there will be abuse of the principles of communism.

The system may work in some future society where humans have moved past selfishness, but that's a long way off if ever.

Read Animal Farm.
