Parents of Murderers
    #3399125 - 11/23/04 05:16 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Even with overwhelming proof, almost ALL parents will say, "My Johnny is incapable of such a heinous act." Let's look at the "reasoning" behind this rigidity.

1. (Ego) Johnny is an extension of us and we are good people; and therefore he could not have done such a thing. To be otherwise might indicate faulty genetics and/or be a negative reflection on our parenting skills.

2. (Hope) There is a slim chance that it REALLY was Columbian drug lords that framed Johnny.

3. (Denial) The new facts presented at the trial totally conflict with our long-standing view of Johnny and therefore we refuse to accept them.

This same mindset can be witnessed regularly here when someone's adopted viewpoint (child) no longer meshes with the facts. The degree of rigidity is directly proportional to the length of time the belief was held, how firmly it was held and how publicly one has made this belief known.

Don't forget that we also generally provide our "purest" side for our parents to see. We hide the things we do that we know would disappoint them, so they have a much cleaner view of us than we may deserve.

Unconditional love is a commitment that most parents have towards their children, whether the child is a murderer or Mother Teresa.

Unconditional love has NOTHING to do with denying the facts. This is yet another erroneous commingling.

and how publicly one has made this belief known.

Hmmm... this explains all the puppets.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Indeed.. for a parent to say "My child would never do that" in the face of blaring evidence would be a sad thing.

For a parent to say "Oh my god, my child did that.. but I still love him anyway..." would be a wonderful thing.

i whole heartedly agree. this is exactly why You being one of the oldest and most 'public' members on the shroomery, will never be heard to concede a point or retract an oppinion.

As well as denial, ignoring people can also help one save face.

Swami, are you a father?

If not, how can you judge the unconditional love a parent has for their child?

Mother Teresa was no Mother Teresa after all.

Nevertheless, people in general have always been afraid of change, so they will resist a complete overhaul of their view of their children. That, and their love for the child also blinds them to the possibilities of actions their child could commit

Mine would probably say "Well, he is just hitting his stride...wait until he goes full blown and check out what happens."

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I was once such an angry person that at a place I worked I was half jokingly voted the guy most likely to show up at work with an AK and rock and roll. What is worse is that I felt flattered by hearing it...I was accepted.
