If you want to bulk substantially, you're going to have to accept that your abs might dissapear for a little while - but you will get them back when you start the cut phase, and potentially, they will be even better - along with your other muscles.

Why woudl your abs disapear?

Consume at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight each day. For example, if you weight 150 pounds, you should be eating at least 150 grams of protein each and every day.

Consume at least 3 to 4 grams of carbohydrates per pound of bodyweight each day. Make sure that most of these carbohydrates come from complex sources such as pasta, rice, oatmeal, potatoes and yams and fibrous veggies such as broccoli and asparagus. The only time you should be feeding your body fast acting carbs is immediately after your workouts.

No need to starve yourself. If you want to add muscle, you need to consume calorie dense foods such as complex carbs.

Your diet ratio should be 50 to 55% carbohydrates, 25 to 30% protein and 15 to 20% fat. See Will Brink's Muscle Building Nutrition. for a complete break down of optimal nutritional ratios.

Spread your eating over a minimum of five meals per day, taking in at least 30 grams of protein per meal. By spreading out your meals in this fashion will ensure that the nutrients for the muscle building process are constantly being supplied.

Drink allot of water! Try drinking at least one gallon of water per day. Water is essential for building muscle.
Consume more calories. Eat slightly beyond the point of satiety. Remember to eat a big, healthy breakfast.
When boosting your caloric intake, gradually increase the amount of calories over a period of 7 to 10 days. This way, you are using the extra calories as fuel as opposed to storing it as fat. If you find yourself stuck, gradually increase the amount of calories per day.

Eat at least 6 times per day, counting significant snacks such as protein shakes as meals.

You have probably already read tons of stuff like that on the internet. Personally i didn't do much in the way of calorie counting. I just added a large bulk shake and another meal to my diet (mostly chicken and rice).

I'd recommend buying a tape measure and measuring your bicep, your chest, and your waist line. Then you can see how quickly you are putting the mass on where you want it and stripping it off where you don't want it. I love lifting and I know a great deal about it, feel free to send me a PM with any questions that you may have.

Three important things
1) WATER - Drink it non-stop. At least 5 liters a day of real unadulterated water. I can't stress this enough

2) Stretch- Every morning, before every workout session and every evening is ideal. But you really want to stretch before and after hitting the weights. This can pull the muscle tissue that you just damaged by lifting and cause it to grow back even stronger. Also, an injury that keeps you out of the gym for 2 months is a horrible disaster.

3) PROPER FORM! - Again, I can't stress this enough. I see people doing "french curles" in the gym and just wonder if they know how badly those can fuck up their elbows. Learn proper form from a personal trainer and feel free to run the exercizes by your family doctor so he can give you some advice.

As I said, anything else, feel free to ask.

hmm very interesting thread for me.

im like only 155 pounds, but i like my body, i got very good muscle definition , great strength and a killer six pack but i too would like to bulk up, so some stuff here is interesting me.

First of all, "Don't be sad when your definition is gone and your six-packs are put in the fridge" are you saying you cant bulk up without losing defintion and a six pack? cuz if so fuck that i love my six pack and girls like the cut look, so i wouldnt sacrafice that. but surely thats not nescessary?

next, about the advice someone gave, said on the bench press move down wieght alot and do 10 reps or 10... sounds interesting, personally i can lift shitloads of wieght on the bench press but i dont seem to bulk up much from it. So maybe theres something to it, but that goes totally contradictory to what ive heard which is for bulk you want maximum wieght and minimum reps, no?

and why only work out major muscle groups once a week? i usually only give it a day of rest between workouts or each muscle group, is that not enough?

working out every other day might be fine in the first six months but eventually you will be over trained and get all weak.
Also when you get stronger you will not have the stamina to give your legs or back a real good workout with only one days rest between. You need to really pummel the muscles in to submission when you do work out and when you do that you will not want to train more than once or twice a week.

Consider that your arms get worked when you do heavy back work, and your triceps when you do chest work etc. One day a week for the majors is enough, trust me on that one.
And yeah you can bulk up and keep the six pack, just not as fast.

Its late and i dont have the time to write more stuff.

well i'm not really that skinny...i have the trianglular shaped back and definition it. i also have pretty thick arms for my size and a pretty chizeled set of pecks and abs as well as those hip things the girlies like. i want to increase the size of my shoulders and neck as well as everything else really. also, i want the strength that goes with this all and i've heard that eating/bulking up leads to the heavier plates.

also, my routine of major muscle groups twice each week hasn't proved me wrong yet and i've been doing this pretty religiously for a couple years and off and on throughout the entirety of high school. i go for power when i work out, that is, about 8-12 reps per set and then increase weights until i can only to a couple. this also hasn't yet proved me wrong.

If you want size+strength, have you heard of "westside for skinny bastards"... its geared towards strength for athletes along with mass building... do a search on the internet and you'll find it.

I did basically what you plan on doing. In ten months i gained 40 lbs. Recently i have lost 10 pounds of what i am hoping is mainly fat. I used a high protein high carb low fat diet and it worked quite well. Lately i have been falling back into depression and my motivation has really dropped. I think i might lose what i worked 10 months for.

don't loose it rydawg, you know you don't want to do that...also...check your thread, i replied to it.

um, problem is now i think i might have mononucleosis...this might be a setback.

rydawg, what did you eat for protein? i'm on the same high protein high carb diet but for protein i'm basically eating a lot of ground beef (spaghetti and meatsauce) and i know that's not the best stuff for you.

Mono sounds like it can be pretty harsh, and the tiredness could definetly be a motivation killer. Motivation is the most important part of making any progress on your body. I would suggest waiting until you are back in perfect health to start your bulking up regimen, or if you really want to start NOW you could use caffeine to boost you when you feel too tired to hit the gym.

AS for what i ate, first off I ate a ton of food. About 3600-4000 calories a day. Ground beef is good for you if it is lean (like 93% lean or higher) You can also buy ground turkey which is very lean, although i never ate that myself. I ate a ton of chicken, salmon (has healthy fish fats), lowfat milk, lowfat cottage cheese, oatmeal, wheat spaghetti on occasion, whey protein after workouts (along with dextrose) steak on occasion. Cottage cheese and milk are good for eating at night, when your body will be deprived of protein for 8 or so hours. Protein in cottage cheese and milk is slow digesting, so it provides protein to your body for quite a while. I also had a cheat meal once a week, which would usally be chinese food, subway, fast food hamburgers, or pizza.

The greatest benefit of working out was how I felt physically. I always had lower back pain but that is compeltely gone. And I just have an overall feeling of healthiness in my body. Also it is fun when in mosh pits, being able to throw a crowd surfer up into the air by your self.

There seem to be a lot of people in this thread who know what they're taking about. Everything i wanted to say has already been said but the most important i'll stress. Most important is protein. S2dope i think said to get 1gram/lb. of body weight and that is your key. Get more if you can but putting that much down is tough. Without protein you won't gain shit. You need to pick a workout for what you want to do with yourself (put on mass). Everyone has their own "best workouts" but thats them and you're you. I read somewhere that your results are 70%diet/30%workout. Drink a gallon of H2o a day. Get plenty of rest. Don't overtrain, you don't want to do all the hard work in vein. OK, just my 2 cents. Goodluck and let us know how it goes.
