Spawning to COIR - "Treasure Coast" 2

Ok... seen results, gonna try it myself.
simply hydrating coir, no pc'n or pasturizing. each brick of coir holds 1 gal of warm water.

lined inside of trays with foil (extra long heavy duty)

each coir brick makes about 2 trays. I spawned 1 qt. per tray, and placed 1/2 qt on top to colonize the top layer first. (to aid as a contam barrier)
Look at the dates... these jars were only 11 days old during spawning.

Time for the spawn run... I actually made 8

did you add anything to the coir?
for it's low ph? for it's low nitrogen content?

ooo I want to see this!
I think I might try a 50/50 spawn/coir mix in impulse sealed boxes soon.
I remember reading that coir was a 'one flush wonder' in someone's grow log.

it's best to use blood meal or coffee to up the nitrogen content, because coir doesn't have much nitrogen to begin with.

nothing added to the coir... learned from an old hand that coir is all you need, and is a substitute to poo. We are all about to be the judge of that here pretty soon.

these were made July 25-27
it's now 7-30 and here's the growth thus far. here is what they all look like with the foil on top. MicoPore tape over the holes.

the coir is very agressive... but we'll wait and see what happens when pinning is triggered. these will sit for a while longer before they are cased.

Looking very nice.
My "coir bags" failed like no other. I got up to find a ton of green mold on one, and the other stalled most likely fighting contams. Oh well our prep method was slopppy among other things. I might try it again later. If I do it will be in a monotub like yours.

2 have been removed and isolated due to contams... seems that a few have already started to fruit. Seems kinda early, with no even pinset.

But looks good! Looks like every tray has lots of pins on them.
Hope this log is good. (will check dry weight with weight of straight cased trays)

your gonna need more than a couple bricks of COIR.
Each Bed-a-Beast brick holds 1 gal. water.
Each brick will make 2 - 12qt. sweater box casings.
if you are spawning 10 jars, I recomend making 8 casings, and use some from the 2 leftover jars as a top layer. To aid as a contam barrier.

Cool oatman,
I'm kinda stuck with coir or cased grain, so I would be interested in how the potency and yield is flush to flush compared with h/poo We all know poo is priceless. But a good substitutes would be good.
Did you use any kind of additives in the coir.??

uhmm the potency will be weakened if anything by coir , its got little to no nutritional value to the cubensis , its simply ground coconut shell , coir is used as a casing layer not a substrate , thats ridiculus , waste..

This has been proven before, but its HARDLY a waste of time OR effort - lots of people who want to do a small hobby grow in the city can't get poo easily, or can't be bothered.
Coir is a great alternative for these people, and if you add a few nutes (hydrate the coir with seaweed extract or worm castings) then your cooking with gas.

Wrong. That's nonesense. Coir is as nutritious as horse manure, and is not suitable for use as a casing layer due to the nutrition unless massively diluted with vermiculite. That's why coir casings overlay so often. Coir is far better suited as a substrate, and there is not one single shred of evidence that coir does not deliver superior potency in cubensis. RR

i've never had issues with potency on coir... flush after flush... its consistent with an isolate, and inconsistent with multispore... like pretty much anything else its my preferred substrate. the only down side to coir is your fruits take forever to dehydrate because they're so damned big.
nice grow glad to see somebody post something proper while using coir because theres some confusion about it and frankly it seems underrated i'm confident you'll agree when you get to trying some of those

How do you incubate those large casings? In the greenhouse without humidity and light?
Also, how does that foil work for you? Any signs of it getting eaten?

Thanks Mitch...
Nope, I believe that for Mycellium to burn throgh aluminum, it's gonna hafft be sitting in there for a real long time. Using aluminum foil in the bottom of casing trays is a must for me now. The foil sticks to mycellum and pulls back when the casing layers shrink. Keeps side pinning down.

I have also found out that Aluminum foil will keep any light out, to also keep side pinning down to almost none. Get the long rolls

Nice job oatman. Those look great! Just because I can't resist rubbing it in a bit, I'd like to show I've been recommending coir here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2521776#Post2521776 for a couple of years now, but was preaching coir as a substrate for a long time prior to that over at the 'other' site. People still seem to think coir as a substrate material is new... RR

COIR used....
BED-A-BEAST
no sterilazation, no pasturization.... just added hot water. Each brick is about $5. Individually wrapped. and will hold 1 gal. of hot water.
Each brick will make 2 casings. This stuff is great!

now that you have seen results is there anything you wish you might have done differently from the get go? Such as soaking in coffee or anything like that to increase nitro levels in the coir? Beautiful job again man. I can't wait to try this strain out. I've heard nothing but good behind it.
Also can't wait to hear how the ride is

I would add coffee grounds to the substrate...
I have noticed small spots of Trich on about 3 casings... Seems maybee i should have pasturized it. (catching up to me)
but other than that the casing look like they are older then they should look. (more depleted)
(possibly maybee a dunk might help this... but i'm not gonna.
I have poo going in soon... mixing up casing now.

Wrong. That's nonesense. Coir is as nutritious as horse manure, and is not suitable for use as a casing layer due to the nutrition unless massively diluted with vermiculite. RR
That's news to me...source?? I can see coir grown shrooms matching (or slightly exceeding) potency of PF grown fruits...but there is no chance in hell coir is as nutritious as horse shite. 50/50 50/40 coir/verm casing has always done wonders for me also.

WOW thats good to hear.
I wonder if potency is less though with the following flushes.
Could coir be used in a mono tub grow?
Those massive fruits have got me wanting to do a straight coir grow for sure

i would say coir could be substituted for the poo in any shape, size and form. I would say that the monotub would work... (but monotubs and doubletubs have never worked for me.They always end up getting contamed before the first flush. IME)
I am gonna try to pasturize the coir next time... got spots of Trich forming.

Nice to hear it worked for you. Coir for me has always been a small scale thing, but never anything big. I think my next grow I will go 50/50 coir / hpoo and see how that goes.
I get some off brand coir from a local place. 3 bricks for $3.99 can't beat that.....
except hpoo = free

Perhaps since you're the one disputing the facts as presented by actual experience, YOU can provide the source. The fact of the matter is, bagged up cow manure is even more nutritious than horse manure. Mushroom growers like horse manure for its texture, not the nutrients. Grains are the most nutritious of all, but there is no evidence that simple cased rye is more potent than rye spawned into manure. The whole nute/substrate thing is poorly understood.
The bottom line is plain coir makes an excellent substrate. It can be made even better by adding manure, worm castings, coffee grinds, cotton seed hulls, straw, etc. RR

There's no rules for how much worm castings or coffee grinds to use. Any can be used as substrate, so just mix in whatever proportions you have. Be sure to check and balance ph. RR

Wow, this is pretty amazing to me. Great grow.
I'm returning to growing after a few years off, and catching up to the latest developments. The idea of using coir as a substrate rather than a casing is totally new to me. I've used coir as a casing many times, and always thought it kicked ass. I can't remember a single contam problem with it. (And I'm not a sterility-overkill grower, so if coir is nutritious, it must have some contam-restistant properties!) It never occurred to me that it had any nutritional value as a substrate. Manure is tough to come by in my area (in manageable amounts anyway) so it's pretty sweet if this really makes a good replacement.
I have spores on the way for my triumphant return to cultivation. Pan cyan and some South American cubensis. Think the cyans will work on coir? I guess I'll give it a try.

There are some reports that the potency drops off dramatically after the first few flushes.
Oatman: Are you adding anything to the Coir this time?

yes i added the grounds of a pot of coffee....
1 per brick

LATER FLUSHES:
you get about 3 good flushes. There is no need to keep a casing after 3 flushes due to nutrients becomming depleted.

WOW, That's amazing, I always use straight coir as a casing, and have wonderfull pinsets. I just tried the 50/50 casing for the first time and it wasn't that great, but it's a new strain (PR) that I never used before as well. Anyways, I'm inspired, I'm going out and buying a few bricks to try it myself. Coir does tend to overlay if your not careful. Oh just picked up the same greenhouse you are using on e-bay for 25 bucks shipped. i abolutely love it. It's so much sturdier than I imagined it would be, and looks good in my bedroom too.
Great job +5 Shrooms for you!!!
