How Drastically Will The Internet Change English?
    #3394239 - 11/21/04 07:09 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

In the long run.  If there will be a long run.  :smirk:  I hear stories all the time from English teachers saying "(student's name here) writes "LOL" in papers", how it's butchering the language.  Your thoughts?  Oh, and I actually heard somebody say "LOL" in a conversation before, it was sad.

He chuckled softly, then said "L.o.l".

Children are using the computer at a very early age and pick up on this new "language". I have seen so many examples of kids not even being able to spell correctly because they sit on the computer all the time and it doesn't matter.

I really don't think it's going to change much of anything at all.

Some kid keeps putting "LOL" in papers? Sure that's awful, but would that have been a good paper before the internet? For some reason I don't believe that the internet is going to turn otherwise intelligent wordsmiths into chat-room drones.

It's like asking if ebonics has changed English. Well, there's certainly people that don't make any fucking sense when they talk, but it's been my experience they have little worth listening to anyway.

Does using LOL in an essay indicate low intelligence then?

You're missing the point I think.  It wasn't ONE CASE of a *High School* student using stupid internet lingo.  It happens every day with more than just "Lol" in papers.  That ebonics part gave me a good laugh,.

We must preserve it because it gives us a way to express exactly how we are feeling. Yeah.

There is change, then there is emulation of ignorance. I see the word "loose" (ill-fitting; not tight) used the majority of the time when the word required is "lose" (to fail; to not win). The more people using words incorrectly, the more others pick up and copy. This I see as quite different than coining a new phrase or slang. Unfortunately, it is perceived as impolitic to even mention such an irregularity.

My current English Composition I teacher also teaches high school (it's a community college, so we get crap for teachers.). He was saying all he teaches is grammar, because the students are so horrible at it. He has mentioned them using "cuz" instead of because and other horrid missusages. It will be interesting in 10 years to see the effects of computers and the language.

At least using "cuz" for "because" is a conscious choice, whereas using "their" (adjective; possessive) when meaning "there" (adverb; position) is just a scary reflection of the degree of illiteracy of our society.

I have no qualms about correcting people's spelling and/or grammar errors. Whether it is perceived as rude or not. :smirk:
