English... to me is the stupidest subject in all of school. I think that languages are just ways of communicating ideas from one person to another. So, why do people get pissy or mark you off for having a bad essay... because you didn't follow the " format ", who says who the "format" is anyway. It doesn't matter if it sounds bad to one person because I'm sure it will sound good to someone else. I was tripping a couple nights ago and came to the conclusion, with a friend, that english is stupid... that there should be a way to directly connect to someone so they understand you automatically. Essays shouldn't have to be written in any format, just as long as you get your point across in the most assertive and easiest to understand way.
I'm writing this because I got a C+ on my last essay that took me like 5 hours to complete. It was a fuckin awsome essay.
How can people make a rubric for what may sound good to one person and not to another?!

Well.. like any method of communication there are rules to it. Conventions that everyone is taught so everyone has the means to comprehend one another at their disposal. Essays are no different. That is, until we have a global psionic breakthrough.

its about practicing practice on something?
if anyone wrote as the would, you would be learning that instead? and that you already know how to do? (like writing that essay you wrote)

there should be a way to directly connect to someone so they understand you automatically.
someday we will come to that ability.it ll take some reprogramming and reconditioning.we humans are being led down the path of stupidity.if you go to a public school then you are uneducated by the time you graduate here in the US anyway.
we should be racing across the universe creating life.instead we want to blow each other up over fossil fuels and other stupid stuff, how dumb is that.
this is my view anyway.
as far as your essay no comment.

5 hours... research included? start to finish? rough draft, good copy? 5 hours doesn't seem like a very long time to devote to crafting an essay...
I don't know much about 'format' but an essay should be a very graceful and efficient means of transmitting information. that takes time and energy to create. (If you're just pulling a little stroy out of your ass, 5 hours is maybe a longish time)

I had the most difficult time writing papers as an undergrad and then as a law student. I think what was in my head didn't make it to the paper and therefore even though I THOUGHT I had done a good job, because I KNEW what I intended the paper to mean, the reader was for some reason unable to intuit my intent because of the absence of the necessary words.
I hired a tutor after law school while I was studying for the second bar exam, because I had failed the first bar exam due to poor performance on the essay portion of the exam. I finally "got it."
I think what I said in the first paragraph is probably the most important. It's difficult to communicate, especially in writing. I think Zeke started a thread on this. People are reading our words and trying to interpret what we are trying to say, based only on the words written. Sometimes what we intend to be meant is interpreted differently because maybe we were inadequate in conveying our intent.
If all the words aren't there, how can the writing be understood?
It takes more practice for some of us than for others. I was getting Cs as an undergrad and lower as a law student. After I hired a tutor, and after I became an attorney, I had finally figured it out and one attorney for whom I had drafted legal documents once told me that he won every motion for which I had drafted the documents. (Of course, he didn't tell me this while I was working for him. Probably didn't want me to raise my price. )
If you are going to go into a career that requires good writing skills, save yourself the time and trouble of figuring out how to write a good paper and get a tutor. The trial-and-error method sucks.
If you're not going to go into such a career, suffer through it and one day it won't matter any more.
Side note: The cool thing about law is there are no grades any more. You either win or lose. But your client's butt is on the line so it's very important to win, even if you have to lie, cheat and steal.

Have you ever seen writings from the middle ages? THere were no rules for spelling grammer or anythign back then and its damn near impossible to read half the time. people just spelling things how they like so you have like 10 different ways to spell every word. half the time they didnt use S they would use F so intsead of "essay" you read "effay". THere are rules so that anyone who has a basic grasp on those rules is able to understand what the writer was talking about. Thats all really. Peace
