A lot of the information revolution was fuelled by hippies and freak types tinkering with computers.

Why does the government want people to be internet addicts? What the hell for? "The government is evil, therefore they only want the worst for us. Hell, they'll even make elaborate technological advances just so people are lazier. Then they'll gain weight! This is a useful thing to do because having fat people is... good."

Some people like to think that everything that is big, or part of mainstream society is actually created by the government in order to perpetrate some kind of evil. I think the root of this thinking is from when we're little kids and we see all these shows where the bad guys don't have any reason. They're just like "I'm going to destroy the world! Muahahahahhha!"

The internet is the awesomest invention ever. Not getting enough excercise isn't good. Get excercise and have a life. You can still do this and use the internet, the vast majority of the people who use the internet do. In fact, most of the people who don't get out enough and sit around on the internet are the same people who would have sat around reading books without getting enough excercise 100 years ago.

Jut because the internet is the excuse a lot of people use for their laziness nowadays doesn't mean it's the cause. Have real life friends and you'll be fine.

The internet is the first place where speech is really free. Everyone can talk about anything.

Ideas are all over the place, music, movies, everything free.

I think some people can't stand to not be rebels. So by denouncing the internet, they can convince themselves that they're fighting "the man".

I spent a period of like 4 years in complete seclusion doing nothing but going to school and gaming my days away on the computer. I had practically no real life friends and no interaction outside of Ultima Online and AOL. It completely drained my ability to properly socially interact with people as well as fueled my unhealth and low self esteem.

I am still recovering. :p

In any case....internet still > TV.

Just tossing around thoughts...... -> because electronic communication can be mediated, monitored. Person to person direct verbal and physical communication is pretty much unmediated.

Depends on what you do while online, is it productive like learning a skill etc etc or unproductive, like playing comoputer games or watching porn etc etc

I have always struggled in relationships with people, and find that online I open up a bit and say what is on my mind more, this is because some of the face-to-face inhibitions drop away.
Online, I am more who I like to be and I think others responses on message boards are more honest than in face to face life.
I can make a point online and get different reactions, some I may learn from in all different ways, face-to-face, I may not even dare to make this point, sometimes I am so on edge I dont even know how I feel.
Having said that, I do try to put myself among people still, just for the balance, and sometimes its good, but sometimes I just wanna come back home

"because electronic communication can be mediated, monitored."

No they can't. Haven't you ever heard the term "hacker"? The internet is the most loose form of communications. 256 bit encryption can insure that you will NEVER be monitored or censored. Why do you think terrorist organizations use the internet to coordinate their activities...because the internet is so hard to monitor well. Every monitoring process could just as easily be countered by electronic means. The web is an agent of freedom, not oppression. It is moving us towards the freedom of all information. To even consider that it is a government plot to remove our freedom of speech is absurd. Look at this forum...do you discuss drug use at work...the police station...even on the telephone? Hell no, but you can do it here without real fear of reprisal.

The internet is the ultimate tool. It is the answer to everything, ask a question, within minutes, you will have a documented answer. You can even ask questions on any article, finding the right forum, and still get an answer even if the question's been asked 20 times before you. It is the ultimate form of communication, you can find people that want to talk about the exact same thing you do, and have as much or more knowledge than you. Once you have had a conversation, you can search the archives for past ones, something you cant really do in real life.

However, it is hard to convey emotion. I hate, I despise AIM, and I spend a lot of time on my computer. Every time I go on, someone will IM me, and ask what's up. I say nothing, and they post nothing else. WHY DID YOU IM ME IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY?!

However, I like internet forums. You can think out your answer, and then type it out, never looking like a fool by giving a quick, mundane answer.

I like having a 'real' conversation because I can look a person in the eye, smoke a bowl or some sweet sheesha tobacco with them, and have much more interaction than I can on the net. However, I cant post a link to a funny picture, or provide a source for my argument during a conversation.

A combination of both internet and real life conversation is the answer. Being ecleptic is always better than choosing one or the other.

I'm not talking about websites like this one. I'm talking about the general MSN, email, non-encryption using population. Their communication is open for the world to see. Anyone who uses encryption is aware of the potential for all electronic communication to be monitored, but they're only taking those steps because they actually care about their privacy. The vast majority of people seem quite happy to have their communication monitored in the name of security, because, after all, they have "nothing to hide"......

The internet has tons of potential.
What better way to spread information and connect with people globally?
What better way in today's society to speak your mind so easily?

The internet has vast amounts of potential.
Unfortunately, a lot of it is filled with crap meant to distract us.

It's a global 'web' of information.. that connects everyone in the world (practically... ) what better way to bring everyone together? At least it's a start..

Isn't this true of "real" life, too?   Society, school, work, or anything we choose to engage in, could be described much the same way.

IMO value is all in the choices of the "engager." The internet, society, relationships, etc...cannot suck your life away without your permission and cooperation.

i only read the first post but its not true. people still see eachother face to face. i think the internet is good for human interaction because it gives people another way to interact. for example when i get home from seeing my real life friends if im not completely satisfied i can come to this board an interact with more like minded people. of course the internet can suck your life away if you let it but you have to take charge of your life and not let an addiction to the internet suck it away. ill admit the internet can be pretty addictive but i dont think that is reason enough to get rid of it.

I agree with you. So many people seek reasons for abdicating responsibility for their actions. It is too easy to say that the reason one is an incompetant, undisciplined basket case is because the internet is ruining their life. One must learn to look within the self for their reasons for disatisfaction, and quit looking for someone or something to blame. Being a helpless victim is not very empowering.

Are computer games really that bad for you? They can be complex and immersive. Some studies suggest that video games can help develop reasoning, reflex, coordination and problem solving skills.

For example: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Health/story?id=814080&page=1

"Common knowledge" is something that everyone knows and believes to be true. It isn't necessarily true at all, though. In fact, it's not uncommon for "common knowledge" to be completely false.

The idea that video games are bad for you is "common knowledge".
