france, germany, china, and russia taking bribes from saddam enabled iraq to fund illicit imports of weapons and technology needed to resume production of w.m.d.'s (i sometimes wonder if the u.n. is to blame for the iraq war)

Try and get a handle on reality here. THERE WERE NO WMD. Ok. That needs repeating. THERE WERE NO WMD.

Now think about your argument in the light of that and ask yourself what sense it makes.

ALEX123 we have found small amounts of sarin and mustard gas. and we know that saddam once had significant quantities of wmd and aspired to build more(with the U.N. help). and he used them against his own people and his neighbors.

I put mustard on my sandwiches. Mustard and mayonnaise and ham and cheese and lettuce. Tomato is nice too but there aren't tomatos in the fridge very often now that the growing season is over.

Yeah - 20 years ago when Bush and Reagan were sucking Saddams pecker.

Reagan may have forgot what he did, that doesn't mean the rest of us should.

Get off it Alex. We were in the Cold War and Iran was the greater threat at the time and it was they who were taking US citizens as hostages. We gave Iraq weapons to fight them off. Priorities change. We trained the Afghans to fight the Soviets too, so what? Osama Bin Laden was not the threat at the time, the USSR was.

In hindsight it teaches us the lesson that the enemy of your enemy is not your freind, but neither set of actions were completely indefensible given the circumstances, though nobody should have let Saddam Hussein have chem weapons.

Saddam was given weapons to invade Iran...not fight Iran off.

And what does Osama bin Laden have to do with Iraq now anyway?

HISTORY

1975: Settlement on frontiers between Iran and Iraq that involved increased territory for Iran compared to the borders prior to 1971.

1980 September 22: Iraq invades Iran, and has early victories.

1982: Iraq has been driven out of Iran.

1982-87: The war enters a phase where Iranian soldiers try to invade Iraq, while Iraqi air crafts bomb Iranian cities and oil installations. Both nations started attacking oil tankers on the Persian Gulf, in reciprocal retaliation. Few territorial advances are made on either side.

1987 July 20: Iran accepts a UN resolution on ending the fightings.

1988: Peace is achieved between the two countries, even if fightings ceased months earlier.
---

Historically Iraq had claimed that it had a right to Kuwait. "They were jealous that Kuwait was in control of the two islands needed for a deep water shipping port:the Bubiyan and Warbah islands."4 These islands along with some parts of Kuwait were a part of Mesopotamia which the Ottoman Turks conquered. "The Ottoman Empire was defeated during World War I and the British made their "own lines in the sand", dividing up the land according to their own strategic needs and in the process recklessly dividing up ancient communities and boundaries that had been recognized for decades."1 Most of Mesopotamia became Iraq and some other parts to Kuwait. In 1961, Kuwait became independent and the Iraqis threatened to invade except that British troops kept the peace. This was to be the first of many border skirmishes which include Iraqi missiles fired at Kuwaiti oil installations and the reflagging of Kuwaiti oil tankers during the Iran-Iraq War in which U.S. ships patrolled the Persian Gulf and Kuwaiti tankers were reflagged with U.S. flags.

Saddam was given no weapons by the USA, as has been shown by about half a dozen different posters to this forum. Hussein bought less than one per cent of his armament from US companies. Try again.

We gave Iraq weapons to fight them off

Iraq invaded Iran.

We trained the Afghans to fight the Soviets too, so what?

Fucking stupid and cruel thing to do to Afghanistan wasn't it. What would have been better for the people of Afghanistan - a puppet Russian government much like the US has installed in Iraq - or the decades of war they got.

In hindsight it teaches us the lesson that the enemy of your enemy is not your freind,

It doesn't need history to teach you it is not good to support dictators gassing people. I would hope most people have learned that by first grade.

Meaningless drivel. What does "percentage of his armament" actully mean?

Try again.

Iraq's U.S. Arsenal

Complicity of firms in Saddam's crimes against humanity now well-documented

By Paul Rockwell

We now know who supplied Saddam Hussein with materials of mass destruction and where his military regime, notorious for atrocities against Iraqis, Iranians and Kurds, acquired helicopters, germs and lethal chemicals--an arsenal of terror. Iraq acquired its weapons of mass destruction from, among others, the United States and Britain--the very countries preparing all-out war to disarm Iraq.

In December, in the long-awaited 11,000-page report to the United Nations Security Council, an Iraq Weapons Inventory listed more than 150 foreign companies, including European and U.S. companies, that allegedly supplied Saddam Hussein with deadly and dual-use material.

Hoping to downplay its own culpability in Iraq's past war crimes, the U.S. reportedly suppressed the list of firms that contributed to Saddam's arsenal, but the dossier was leaked to a German newspaper, Die Tageszeitung, which published it. More information trickled onto the back pages of The New York Times and the Washington Post. The main facts are no longer in dispute.

The U.S. companies listed, some of which have facilities in Silicon Valley, include Spectra Physics, Honeywell, Dupont, Eastman Kodak, Bechtel, Tektronix, Unisys, Rockwell and Hewlett-Packard. They allegedly provided materials for Iraq's rocket program, planned nuclear weapons program and conventional weapons program, which includes military logistics as well as supplies and materials for building weapons plants.

The complete list included 24 companies with home bases in the United States, along with 50 subsidiaries of foreign companies that conducted their arms business with Iraq from within U.S. borders.
