Spawned it today at a 1:2 ratio, with a thin top layer to cover the grain. The coir was on the slightly drier side of field capacity but still ok. I'd rather it be dryer then too wet since I can add water if needed by bottom watering. The spawn did smell like mushrooms but slightly different in a good way. Maybe more button mushroom then cube mushroom spawn. I might be crazy but different species of mushroom smell different to me. My favorite is semperviva, which is a woody, vanilla, earthy scent to me.

Different species of mushrooms definitely have their own scents for sure! I love how section Mexicanae smells like lol Tampanensis, Mexicana, Caerulescens, Hoogshagenii and others. They smell so good! Cucumbers with a slightly sweet smell to it and slightly earthy as well :laugh: anywho, excited to see your results!

I had 2 Qt jars that finished up before the others so I figured I’d make one fat shoebox.
I didn't measure the coir but probably around 1.5 to one coir to spawn. I did exactly as i do for cubes: compressing the sub and topping with a pseudo casing layer around 1/2” thick and compressing that too. I’m waiting on the H-poo to age a little in the back yard. The only stuff I could find was super fresh.

I think it's colonizing pretty well for 6 days. I have stuff that takes 3 weeks to get this far along.

So far it seems to be ok. I'm hoping the brownish color is normal and not metabolites unless that's normal for these.
I figured I'd throw these up so people can see the colonization process and what it looks like for them.
I also don't know why it looks more blobby by the holes, at first I was worried about trich but it hasn't changed in a few days so I think it's normal.
I did mist it a few days ago and it seems to have helped maintain good surface conditions since.

So these are officially slower then my Yeti culture. No pins on the zinnii yet and was spawned same day(Oct. 3rd), same ratio. Yeti pins popped up yesterday. Prepping more grain for another go but with the MS. I have seen promise of rhizo growth with the MS on low nutrient(1%) plates but it reverts back to tomentose on higher nutrient agar. It should be interesting to see what it looks like on grain.

The change to tomentose on higher nutrient isn't necessarily bad.

It's the mycelium going from gotta survive to this place is our home.

You can see the mycelial finger I plopped onto a new plate, it started replicating its tactics, and then stopped, and it went into suburbs mode effectively.



If it was Rhizo, and now its tomentose, one can say that the mycelium is ready to eat and grow.

The stuff that came from that plate was incredible.

I don't really care if it's rhizo or tom, I was just putting it out there because I saw someone wondering what would happen on low nutrient agar and I had happened to have done both style plates. I get good shrooms from both and never understood why people always went for rhizo. Love your analogy about home.

It’s just easier to spot irregular growth / contamination. To be honest, I just like the look. Mostly an aesthetic choice.

Still no pins or knots. I decided to toss a super thin casing of coir on it. 🤞🏼

Also throwing some MS to grain today. I think I'll do a separate rhizo and a tomentos tub of each and see how it goes.

Because dude rhizo looks dope as fuck 😂 also easier to distinguish what's clean and dikaryotic without using a scope of course.

I haven't really been following along a whole lot. But secret hack to get something to pin that won't is dunk it for half a day and then put it back into fruiting. Might help you.

I thought about punishing, which helped my KSAT, it but figured since pseudoaztecorum like a casing try that first.

Seems like I'm getting overlay. I'll throw some pics up in a little. So far it's not the worst I've seen but it's getting thick. Maybe a good forking is in order. (I'm not doing that yet)

With the ochra culture I have,  the first flush comes in a little sparsely. A lot of the overlay comes off with the mushrooms while picking .  After that it doesn’t come back and it’s business as usual. Not super worried about it.:shrug:
