I had a closer look at the other two boxes and they already have quite a few knots and tiny pins, so idk if it makes sense to do anything to them huh? I'd be washing it all away ...

Then I would do a floating lotus, which is filling the tub with just enough water to make the cake float and leave it for 12 hours, if the water is gone repeat until no more water is soaked up and pour it out

You could send that to bulk, or wait if that's more convenient for you. Either is fine:mushroom2:

Anyone have issues with jars cracking?

I have an insta pot and I always use a trivet, room temperature water, let it depressurize naturally but the past few runs I've had almost half my jars get cracked.

Some were older quart jars but I also bought brand new kerr wide mouths and had half of them crack.

I can't figure out why this is happening

Could be clacking around together in the pc, doesn't take much force for glass to chip on other glass, once it's chipped/cracked it's toast. I use an 8qt insta as well and I usually roll up two thin foil snakes and put them between the jars in an x so they dont move around, I'll draw a lil picture hold up...

Imagine you're looking top down, the red is the foil snakes, the circles are the jars

I cracked a few cheaper jars by pouring boiling water into them without pause. Even cheaper jars seemed to survive if I first pour a tiny bit and let them warm up before filling them up completely. As for pc'ing I'm not sure. Maybe some jars have a lifespan or maybe your jars are touching the sides of the pc

They are heating up to quickly. with larger vessels like Pressure canners it takes awhile for them to heat up so cracking doesn't happen often. Though I have had petris crack in my 6qt presto. The change in temperatures happens to quickly that the internal temperature of the glass doesn't have a chance to acclimate. It's called thermal shock.

Even with pressure canners, warming jars up is recommended by the manufacturer to avoid cracking from the thermal shock. You should heat up the jars in a pot of water, bringing the water level at least halfway up the jars before cooking them. Then fill the IP with the hot water used. This should stop the cracking

They look alright, the couple wet looking grains are bacteria. Though, currently, the grain doesn't look bacterial enough to cause compromising contamination until after the first flush

Seems a little strange. I use jars with and without trivet all the time in my 8qt IP. Never had a jar break. Do you have enough water in the pot? You aren't running dry, are you? I don't mind water touching the bottoms of the jars or even more, but too little water could lead to fast heating or overheating if it runs dry.

I run Ball brand quarts and pints, cheap Chinese 1/4 pints, and even Ikea cookie jars that are not meant to be heated at all, and never had a crack. This probably doesn't help much, but it make me think that something isn't right.

A floating lotus you say huh

I'll talk to my gf about that one XD

Btw, None of the tubs have shrunk, I think they still have moisture, it's just the surface that's the issue. I might see now why your interventions were going in the way of rehydrating ...

floating Lotus seems crazy until you do it and then all the surface beads come back and round 2 starts.

I'm with Kloakk on this one. Punish it or fork it. Floating lotus to recharge the water reserves, my added 2 cents would be to add a pseudo casing of coir to restart the surface after you punish/ fork and soak.. its essentially a restart button. Dial back the FAE a little bit to make sure your re-soak promotes naturally occurring surface beads then slowly add the FAE back in. It looks a little dry from the photo.

I've had some lions mane in buckets be stalled for about 3 weeks now with dry surfaces. I stuck them in a large modified tub with hydrated perlite and in 2 days they started fruiting. Mushrooms love water, moisture, and humidity.

It may just 'look like a bad surface' but what is the colony doing?

No problem! Anytime:smile::mushroom2: once everything is colonized. Minus those couple wet grains. 3 days- 1 weekish. temperature and genetics being the difference in timing

What's good Blopblop!:mushroom2:

Bluelabs makes a great ph meter. I used to use one for pastuerizing straw.

Just be sure to stay on top of its maintenance + balancing or it'll get all whacky and not work right.

I learned the hard way and broke mine:facepalm:

I got this one from a local hardware store (Amazon Link)

It worked pretty good for me when making a casing for Pans. You take a sample of the substrate. add water to make it kind of muddy/ soupy and stick it in there and it tells you on a digital screen
