Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: firebirdpro]

My plates always turn out with a lot of condensation when I make them, like tons of pooling. I usually ignore it but I'm planning on making a lot of trenches soon, so I want to try to minimize the pooling. I've read that cooling them too quick might be the reason why. I do no pours in screw top PP5 containers and I usually take them out of the pot as soon as the pressure lets off because you're not supposed to let them cool in there, but should I be leaving them in a little longer? Or should I be insulating them by putting them under a towel or something after I take them out? Or is this just inevitable because it's always so humid where I live all the time? I can tip out most of the condensation in the SAB, but I usually still end up with a little pooling from the stuff that clings to the lids. Maybe I give them a good hard shake before they go into the SAB to get it all pooled in the bottom?

Why can't you let no pours cool inside the PC? I always did that.

Sounds familiar, I got the same. How long or if at all, do you let your plates cool after pouring them? Last batch I did, let them chill for 20min without the top, resulted in minimal condensation that subsided next day/two.

Edit:
Pasty I did that but then ended up with few slanted plates lol. I have small PC so I can't really put them all leveled. I still used them and it was all fine, issue is only aesthetic.

I really appreicate puff for having me take a look at my vectors. I let the plates grow out for a week and they were covered in bacteria and one had black mold growing inside the agar.

I know I accidentally doubled the amount of agar in my recipe, I'll make sure to check that next time. I will also attempt with 2 runs in the pot, first run will be the agar prep jar, then I'll do a second run after pouring each jar and then wait a week to see if I still have contamination.

The grain jars I made so far have no visible contamination and it's been weeks since I made those. I spent a lot of time improvising those runs though and I made sure to mix them all up carefully and then do a second full run from start to finish after they cooled a litle. Using a big sheet of foil over the top of the pot also really helped hold in pressure as well as smells of BRF. Secured it to the handles. Usually the BRF smell can be strong but I didn't really notice it until I took the foil off the top.

I may end up doing 3 runs on my agar and mix up the initial jar after the first cycle and then do a 2nd run on it, or maybe that would be overkill since I'm already rerunning each of my poured jars after. I'll also use the correct amount of agar in the recipe, maybe even a little less.

You can let them cool in the PC but it doesn't change anything for the better, condensation wise, in my experience. I pull them while they are still hot but not enough that they burn my hands, and stack them as high as I feel comfortable stacking them. Usually 10-15 high and push the stacks together. Let them cool for a few hours minimum or overnight for better results. The bottom 4 or 5 are usually condensation free or at a minimum. I also leave the lids loose, but barely loose, and store them for a week. Usually this helps the remaining condensation. I'm not saying they will be perfect but it does help. Also you can pour off the excess water when doing a transfer. If you leave the lids loose don't push on the center of the lid or you create a vacuum and can suck contams in. Handle them by the edges.

Hmmm will this smaller one work for quart jar work or should I just spend the 60 more for comfort? It's mostly for gar n g2g work

Edit decided I'ma get the medium sized one as the upgrade will only cost me 25$ because of a decent discount :drunkaf:

I follow the Josex tek pretty religiously. He seemed to consider it a possible contam vector. But my trivet also has an annoying lip that would cause them to cool slanted.

I usually let them cool for about 20 minutes as well. Or until the condensation from the hot agar disappears from the walls. They look perfectly dry going into the PC. I'm always atounded how much they fog up in the PC.

I have also taken to stacking, it helps, but it's not perfect. The loose lids scares me a bit, but I suppose it's quite the journey up the threads for any contam, so I'll give that a try this time, thanks!

Do you still use your EZ-Dial tubs? I searched high and low for the 66qt purple handled sterlite tubs and finally found them locally.

what are your temps and rH in your environment? If I may ask.

I'm currently using one to run Beef's AIO rescue tek, and i'm thinking when its done that im going to run a few of your EZ-Dial tubs, so far its been awesome.

I do and up where I live it's cold and dry. The ez dial is perfect for standard bulk, you want to have about 20 quarts of media (grain and bulk combined) in the tub to maintain the RH.

Hell yeah dude thank you.

Let me pick your brain on this if you're so inclined. So I have some tubs that have a fatty first flush. I had a couple start to stall out right before the veil tore. When I opened it up I noticed the temp inside the tub was warm to my hand. Tryp said the reason for the stall was probably temp swings but i keep the room at a solid 74-76F... So this made me think that the the metabolic heat coming off the growth itself was the reason for the stall. The fruits growing caused more heat in the tub which caused the slow down.

Have you come acros this before? am i thinking correctly?

I dont do no-pour's, but Kloakk recommended that i leave them in the SAB without wrapping them for a few days. I left mine for about 4-5 days in the SAB after pouring without parafilm and they came out great.

Also, i found some telephone brand agar which also helped a lot with it being water. I was using some stuff off amazon and that shit came out W E T

A big substrate is definitely gonna produce some heat for sure but that wont stall them usually. They fruit outside in India all the time. A big temp swing might cause a bacteria bloom or help a trich colony get a foothold and those might slow things but just the heat by itself shouldn't.

I guess the real question is how hot did it get? If below 85 I wouldn't even consider it the issue.

Big subs though, depending on how large of course, can get into those 85-90F range.  The mushroom myce will def slow at that point while bacteria and mold are encouraged

Its about 5 quarts of Sub and 2 quarts of spawn in a 15qt shoebox/ tub. But what you say makes since. I also saw a comment you made on a post about 12-13 days ago talking about how FAE can increase metabolism which keeps surface conditions in check. I just recently replaced the lid with another tub to dub tub it. and thats when I started to see the slow down. Co2 got high and i got fuzzy feet so i opened it more and that helped get rid of the fuzzy but the feeling of the heat coming off the mushrooms was an interesting find.

2.5:1 ratio in a larger shoe box. Ambien temp in the room is 74-77F room humidity is 20-30%. I was thinking about getting a small thermometer to stick in the tub to see what it actually is inside the tub.

Yee if it somehow is hitting 85 or hotter that will really encourage any kinda contaminations u got if ur spawns not clean.

I've had success with cubes at 50 degrees (slow af) up to 80 + like 3 degrees from metabolic heat

Best colonization speeds where between 67 to 74 f 😅

The larger the substrate, generally, the cooler I like to keep the ambient temperature.

QQs about transfers…

Is it best to transfer when the mic has just started (dime size) or wait until it gets larger (half dollar or bigger?). I am trying, in desperation, to get Ghost going once again and it seems what I am starting with is highly bacterial.

I tried on agar, cleaned it up with a couple of transfers and went to grain - the tub never fruited and it seemed it was bacterial spawn.  So, I went to PF, grabbed a tiny piece and its now on agar just starting out.  Note, the PF cake is in a water tub and is colonizing the verm top layer, but has not fruited.

Its frustrating, but I want to keep trying.

I’d let it get the size of a half dollar, personally.  Here’s the trick.  Take a sample no larger than a grain of rice from the very leading edge before the culture hits the walls of the dish.
