Re: AGAR ENVY! (Anything and All things agar!) [Re: Nokumana]

This plate got kinda gross while waiting for germination from a print (NecD). It for sure has some bacteria and a mold growing on it but I noticed some (what looked like) germination a few days ago (day 21) directly in a patch of spores on the agar so I let it ride longer. The big fluffy white patch grew around the heavy spore deposit on the agar which is why it has kind of a donut shape with a dark center.

This is my first go at growing pans/NecD so I'm just not sure if the super-white stuff growing out of the heavy spore deposit is just another type of mold or if thats what pan myc looks like. I haven't seen it on any of my other plates but they are all cubes. (The agar has a lot of sediment because its the bottom of an old mix and this is what it decided to do.)

Any thoughts on the white fluff?

Question? Besides food coloring what do people do to differentiate between Low nute, high nute, and WA plates? Is a tiny amount of food coloring the best way? I could just label, but, color would help this ADHD mind.

I've got some action on my spore plates! Very new to cubes and mostly familiar with what the rhizomorphic growth looks like so I'm not 100% sure I've got the right stuff growing.

First the B+.

Growing pretty quick so I'm thinking about transferring soon. There's a concerning spot where I added the spores so I planned on transferring from as far away from that spot as possible.

Next the Malibar.

This one is looking awfully strange. It's growing pretty slow but it is growing. Needs some more time before transfer. Almost looks like it's bubbling. Getting the feeling that it might be slightly bacterial. Maybe I'm just paranoid though and it needs some time. I've been seeing good progress with a trench plate I've got going so I was thinking that might be a good idea when I transfer this one too.

Gotta be careful with food coloring. Never use dye that have any form of red#5, like red and purple. Red#5 is naturally fungicidal. I have made the mistake of making a few plates purple color and ALL of them died

Newbie here.
Both agar plates are 10 days old, but one seems to be growing way slower than the other.
Is that normal?

Golden Teacher from spore print, by the way.

It's a good idea to wrap the outside of ur plates especially if your gonna handle or move em around at all otherwise u suseptable to bad stuff getting in from eddies from quick movements or just wind / lung rooms in the house n whatnot.

Best bet is to transfer from around 11 oclock on the top one asap. That leading edge has the best chance of a transfer away from any nasties. The one on the bottom has mold in it, you can tell by the large area of translucent growth at 6 o'clock

Thanks for pointing that out! Yup, that patch has already gone into a grain jar! I'm still learning how to spot contamination, so your explanation really helps. Thanks!

Yup, I did wrap them! It's just on the other side, so you can't see it in the photo. Thanks anyway!

Golden Halo T1

Unused Swab plate, gonna have to sample 11pm.

Now, is this something to worry about? I remember reading about a halo in the contamination forum, but this just looks like the extension of the mycelium, in this case?

This is Purple Mystic Clone, not sure if this one is just wetter agar or this one is a sign of bacteria.

Here's another pic from another plate.

GWAM (AA+ x Australian), gonna grab from 9o clock

and an Eungella one that is gonna get archived, wedged, and put to LI to inoculate cakes.

As a follow-up, I had sub'd a bunch of it to 6 plates like 10 days before I made this initial post. After another few days of really good looking growth putting it over 2 weeks old now, and lots of looking at pan myc posts, I decided it's most likely good myc. I sent one of the plates to a half pint of grain today to see.

That weird "halo" that could be the extension of the myc - does this seem to plague your wetter plates? I saw that quite a while ago myself but I vaguely remember contributing it to wetter plates.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying for sure that's what it is and my memory is garbage. Im jc bc that plate looks a bit wet.

These plates are wetter, both due to condensation and perhaps the brand of agar being sweatier.
