I would ditch the spacers and tape and leave the lid on upright, no clips until pins form, then flip it, slightly offset.

I was told this too when I started. Honestly I’m team mist if you have to. I live in a place that is VERY dry and getting fae and having high humidity is a juggling act that rarely doesn’t include some type of Misting. EZ dial tubs have helped, but not totally eliminated the need to mist for me.

Will try this with my freshly spawned tub and report back 😊  Thanks for all your pointers Tryp. I've been thinking about this but got PTSD from a Tupperware lid closing too tight with no air gap and it caused bacteria to grow. However I know these lids arent air tight like a food storage container. 😅

& @Joe, I feel like im batteling the same, but now getting this recomendation from Tryp makes me think im shooting myself in the foot by providing too much FAE. Maybe MP tape gives more FAE than im aware of or expecting.

So I see all the time that "You shouldn't have to mist/ Open your tub until after the first flush" and that "surface conditions happen naturally"

And from what I'm gathering, if you get field capacity right from the jump and your tub's conditions i.e. FEA dialed in correctly, modified holes in the right place and right size. Room conditions such as temperature and relative humidity  are locked in. Your tub shouldn't ever really look dry or lack the micro water beads indicative of proper surface conditions.

I'm flipping back and forth between "LITFA" and "give it a mist"

If there are knots and primordia everywhere, but the surface looks a little matte or dry,,,, do you mist it or LITFA? Do the surface conditions with micro beads stay through out the first flush or do those micro beads evaporate or suck up into the substrate before it pumps out fruits like a tsunami pulls the shoreline back before releasing its wave.

I know this questions gets beat to death but I keep coming back to it each time I level up each time I come back to it I get a new understanding based on my current understanding level.

Thats some really pretty looking surfaces bud. And that third pic with the mycelium climbing like the hungry beast it is... amazing.

I also have the same conflict as you do ahaha. LITFA or mist? I am beyond excited with my current grow, so if Im home, I will go watch the tubs in awe, admiring their beauty.

I only started misting when pins were 5-10mm and I posted some pics here and a few of you guys commented that it looked on the dry side.

I am about to harvest and I had ZERO aborts, and I misted pins and everything, generous mists once or twice a day. Hard to just mist surface when theres pins everywhere. Mine didnt seem to be bothered by it. I do use an ultra fine mister and distilled water. Thats my $0.02

What worked for me may or may not work for you, I dont know your room temperature, RH, FAE, etc. DYOR

good luck with those great looking tubs!

Something that really stuck with me is when Pasty said mushroom growing is about mindset

He proposed that most problems can be solved by having the right mindset (im paraphrasing)

Like with the mist it or LITFA dilemma,  I would say this dilemma comes to those who have their eggs in a few, if not one, basket

I realize not everyone is at the Tony Montana size of operations but the principle still makes sense

MushLuvR77 also proposes that the best philosophy is to always have new stuff in rotation, that way each tub is seen as more of an experiment than a tub that you really need to helicopter over

At the end of the day, i think the intuition part of mycology (to mist or not to mist) comes down to just sheer raw data (lots and lots of tubs/cakes), that way you have enough info to vibe your way through it

Ultimately you need to see what the mushroom needs and then provide it. If it needs nothing... LITFA

Hi, first time grower here, does this look ready to start fruiting? It's definitely reached pretty much full coverage on the surface, but on the bottom and sides there's still what look like gaps. But it's hard to tell with all the condensation and the vermiculite being all glittery.

My own newbee opinion:

It's knotting up with a very thick substrate. Assuming your substrate was field capacity, there's plenty of moisture available for fruiting. I'd set it and forget it with an upside down lid. You can displace the lid a centimeter or two once you start to see pins (or displace the lid 1cm now). This will improve evaporation and help clear out CO2.

I'd like to hear what the trusted cultivators say on my advice. I'm trying to learn too.

how would one go about using hardwood pellets or sawdust(what would be recommended for gyms?)
in a substrate with coir? is there any extra prep to be done or just to add?

as always thanks a lot!

I'm not a tc. but I know what I'm doing.

And yes I can confirm you have given good advice. Really just let that thing ride don't change anything unless you have it choked off from Air for some reason. Im which case give it fae.  And keep up the good work.

If for some reason you haven't already allowed Fae because you're under the assumption you're waiting to put it into "fruiting conditions". As mentioned above that's not necessary..  around here we start Fae from the very beginning.

Depending on what set up your using.  Flipping/displacing the lid is a good way to do give it thst fae.

I like to just put enough to cover like barely even half an inch of the bottom of the cake.

Come back a couple hours later. If the water got absorbed.  add more. If not you can leave it for a day or so.

Just keep an eye on it don't let it sit in water for too long and get soft.

And you can just continue/repeat  the process throughout the PIN set.

Make sure those babies got whatever they need to drink just to influence them to grow to the best of their ability.
