Help me understand
    #29686528 -

Jesus said only hypocrites pray in public and they will not go to heaven.

Why do Christians still pray in public?

Matthew 6:5

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Originally Jesus said that anyone can experience religion because the church lives in your heart not in bricks and mortar.

That doesn't make money so that was quickly scribbled out and now everyone's told they need to go to church and pray otherwise they don't go to heaven.

That is a scam.
Anyone can be religious and no one needs to go to church to do it. Why do you think God would expect people to go to a building where they pass around a basket asking you for money to experience religion?

How fucking stupid is that?
Pray wherever the fuck you want.
If your intent is real, then it will be heard just as well as anybody who put money into a basket and did it in a church.

Absolutely agree. But the question is,  why do Christians defy this very plain instruction from their savior?

Because someone else says? Or maybe cuz everyone does it? So it's just a religion of following thy neighbor? Are all abrahamic religions this?

What am I missing?

That rule does not matter. You didn't understand the post.
People can and will pray wherever they want to and it doesn't matter that it's written in some book that you can't. If you actually feel like praying do it.

I agree. But my question still stands.

Why do devout Christians ignore that part?

It's all bullshit. Religion is a communicable psychosis.

Just my thoughts but I believe most things Jesus said shouldn't be taken literally. By ordering people not to pray in public he meant they shouldn't do that with intention of showing how religious they are, which to be honest would be the main reason to pray where everyone can see you.

Truly, I see your point. But in the next verse he gives explicit instructions on precisely where exactly to pray.

Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

I'm gonna go ahead and give my assessment.

We continue to defy this instruction from our savior because everyone else does. Because our parents and their parents did.

It's a cultural tradition to pray publicly and we don't care what the Bible says.

We are herd animals. We follow.

Lets consider why we believe what we believe and the effect we have on each other.
