Using grafting tape/parafilm on agar plates, screw-on agar plate suggestions
    #29686252 -

I’ve seen on several YouTube videos and mentioned on here several times that people are sealing disposable agar plates with parafilm. I bought some and I immediately questioned why anyone would think it would be a good product. I watched a video on YouTube of how to seal an agar plate with parafilm (the first one that comes up) and it seemed to work, I did no pour tek on my plates and got them with parafilm.

Pc’d everything and as anyone could fucking guess, my parafilm melted, the agar plates are full of extra water now, and I just wasted an entire night and a bunch of materials trying some outrageous method that did not work. Why the hell are people saying to use this shit? What’s up with all the info that goes around this community that’s just straight up wrong? Why did I just waste several hours of my life and materials messing with this? Additionally, why are agar plates even being made at this point that don’t screw on?

Does anybody have a suggestion for good agar plates that screw on? I’ve had it up to my neck with the bullshit methods people use on this forum. Starting to question if no pour tek is even a good way to do this.

Edit: also one other thing: how do I make my agar plates not foggy? This seems to be a major issue with no straight answer

Parafilm is good shit.

I made a video about how I use it and only really showed it to lith and kloakk, it might not be super helpful here, but fuck it, here it is:

Hood's off so I can talk, so ignore like, hand positioning and that aspect of sterile technique. It's not about that.

If some YT video said to PC parafilm, link it, because that's... unusual. Are there teks on here saying to do that?

This is the right question. Because no, it is not, IMO. Pouring plates the normal way in a sab is tedious, but so is chasing no-pour issues. 60mm plates are the way.

It's annoying for sure. For no pour, IDK if it can be helped. For regular plates, the main thing is pouring as cold as you can. The cooler your agar is, the closer it is to its set point while still molten, the less condensation you end up with, because there's less temperature swing. You can also set something like a mug/jar of hot water on the top of the stack when pouring to help keep the top one less foggy. Flow hood also adds more options but if you're doing no pour I presume that's off the table.

Nothing to add re: screw on plates.

Parafilm is great, but obviously for wrapping room temperature plates.

If you're doing no pour you should be covering your plates, some use foil, other use jars upside down and some have container, point being a touch barrier to get them from the PC and to your SAB or hood. In the SAB with armhole covers or hood you can leave your plates until the condensation has cleared and THEN wrap them with parafilm.

I do prefer pouring myself, but both work. I totally understand the frustration when things fail though.

Parafilm came into use in the 1950’s and is still used in labs around the world.
I just wanted to comment to be able to follow the thread. I won’t add anything else until I have coffee.

I've been using no pours for a long time using Holy Grail cups.

Just make you agar a couple weeks in advance and you won't have any problems.

I don't wrap my no pours with parafilm before or after PC either. I do cover them with tinfoil and keep it on until I'm ready to use the stack.

Seems like a skill issue to me.

Hey, given that I empathize with the frustration of spending a lot of time and some resources with not even a workable result, I want to tell you straight that you probably didn't follow the instructions given on the resources you mentioned (please prove me wrong by providing the links!).

Not even the worst informational videos of mushroom cultivation on youtube suggest to pressure cook parafilm or cling wrap.

And I highly doubt you found that info in the Shroomery. Expecially by those using and suggesting no pour teks, since they have to work with PP5 plastic, because they know well that not every plastic can withstand the temperatures needed to sterilize in a PC.

For some people no pour works great (they don't pc cling wrap nor parafilm), I prefer using reusable plates and pouring.
To each their own

In the end you can learn from your mistake, if you're starting now, be ready to deal with that frustration, otherwise you won't survive this hobby

Here in the Shroomery people are sharing valuable informations and are willing to help everyone.

There are many ways to get a succesful grow, some are better in some circumstances/contexts. Try to understand the basic principles (read here!) then read the TEKs trying to understand why they suggest that. And then apply it to your context and your goals!

Hey Dj,
Can you explain what process you followed to PC your plates?

Hey friend, here's :2cents:
DISCLAIMER: I'm absolute beginner.
I did two batches of no pour so far. Screw on plates. First one I poured and closed almost immediately. Second one I left them settle down about 10-20min before closing them.

Result:
Both were foggy after PC, but latter ones cleared much faster, day or two. Former ones took a week or so to clear out, with some still having a little drop here and there.

I followed Josex guide to do so. I also sent couple of them without any went holes but I left those slightly unscrewed. Be careful if you do that to give at least 1/4 turn unscrew or you risk your cap collapsing (happened to one of my plates lol).

I'll edit this later to add pictures.

One thing it seems odd to me. Did you wrap your plates before PC? if so that's something you should NOT do. You wrap them afterwards. I haven't done it cuz it seemed redundant to me, since plates are screw on, unlike common petri dishes. I did exactly as PuffM4gicDr4gon said, put some foil on top to prevent condensation and getting the micropore tape too wet and keep em clean until use. Hope this helps and don't get discouraged, accept failure as a teacher.
Mush love!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
1st batch{21/09}, you can see this one is slanted cuz I left them too cool inside PC(don't do that, get em out while they are hot, carefully). I hope you can see little droplets. Forgot to add a bit of distilled vinegar to mitigate cloudy plastic.

This one is same batch, just wasn't cracked open enough so the cap dropped in a bit.

2nd batch{30/09} I think this one was without vinegar too, not sure tho. Vent hole is on the side.
