It looks good, you just need to give it time to fully colonize the substrate, maybe a few more days.

If you prepped the substrate correctly, it should be at what's called "field capacity"

If your substrate is at field capacity,  it will start to produce countless water droplets on the surface by itself after it has fully colonized, without you having to mist it

If all of that was done, you did a perfect job and mushrooms will pop out when they are ready to

I bought some sterilized grain bags from an allegedly trusted vendor. They sell supplies for gourmet mushrooms, but grain is grain.

I grabbed some bags and this is what arrived:




I contacted the vendor and asked what was up with all the residue in te bags. They said they add sawdust to catch excess water from the grains. I said I was not a fan, that properly hydrated grain shouldnΒ΄t release water. And I said that I felt like this sawdust thing was cutting corners.

Was I a dick?

I ended up getting a full refund once I showed them some contaminated bags.

Question is: is this sawdust bs a thing? Was I a Karen? Should I just toss all the bags or try to inoculate the ok looking ones?

If the bag is already contammed when you get it,  you should get a refund for it

Although im not entirely sure I see contam

Im assuming they have a self healing injection port for liquid culture syringe

Go ahead and innoc the ones that dont have contam

sawdust is technically for woodlovers so it might not be best for dung lovers but it could work depending on what your growing

No injection port, just a filter for breathing.

If you zoom in at the bottom of the bag there some contaminated grains for sure, not so obvious in the picture because when handling the bag some grains ended up buried and out of sight. But theres contam for sure.

I Think I will just toss them, I donΒ΄t have lots of LC to be wasting it in sus looking bags.

how risky is inuculating with a syringe poking the bag and then placing some micropore or duct tape in the hole? Of course inside a sab, sterilized needle, ISO sprayed on bag and so on.

Its slightly risky but should work if your sterile technique is on point

Im not gonna tell you to buy more stuff but you'll have the best chances if you get self healing silicone and apply it to the bag as a SelfHealingInjectionPort (SHIP)

There is a slight chance that duct tape has contamz; ive seen applying micropore to the injection hole work, but that was on some uncle bens tek shit which we politely shun on this forum (even tho it can still work sometimes)

Like i said ive seen it work so its worth a shot

If using lc or mss to inoculate make sure ur filter is up higher than the lvl of grains to prevent potential wetness getting on your parafilm or micropore or whatever :smile:

If using some kinda tape like that unravel a fair bit and cut it and toss that first piece in the trash. :smile: just to increase chances of success lol

Fruit it β€” it's practically begging you to. If I'm not mistaken, you've got pinning or early hyphal knots there.

And if you can, post a closer, more detailed photo of the substrate. It's hard to gauge the humidity from this picture.

Thanks guys. I will be starting to use jars with injection ports soon, just waiting on my PC and gas burner to be delivered. And a 20kg bag of oats should be here tomorrow.

But since I have these grain bags I thought it could be worth a shot... but the more I think about it the more I want to save my LC and agar for sawdustless grain.

Basic questions about PC runs:

Β·Jars can touch each other but not touch the walls of the PC, right?
Β·When stacking two layers of jars, having just a separator (with lots of holes, like one of those pizza trays) between the two layers is good enough? My instinct tells me that ideally there has to be a bigger gap for steam to pass through more freely.
Β·Whats the general consensus on PP5 plastic jars for spawn? How well do they tolerate the PC cycles? Do they end up giving up and losing the tightness on the twist lids?

I have two lil jar containing left over spore solution . Is mixing them together then putting it in one syringe a viable method for crossing if sent to cakes?

Obviously many fruits might not be crosses, but if they are distinct phenos it should be east to identify when a cross happens.

Ive grown a lot of shrooms wirh hollow
Stipes for years.  Ofc solid stipes are ideal, but theres nothing inherently wrong with hollow guys.  Fp+, charlie brown, sGT, are all hollow and thems are awesome cultures.

Edit: read your earlier post, sounds like you're wondering when to start "fruiting" it, you can introduce "fruiting conditions" from the getgo when spawning to a tub. Covering the holes for colonization is an outdated way of doing things. Open that sucker up and let it breathe, you have knots, it wants to grow

I Pre prep my quart jar yerday with Rye. I boil the Rye Grains for 40min in Water then i let it cool down so the Vapor is gone for that a use a layer of Backingpaper for the Rye Grains so that they can dry a bit. I filled 2 quart jars with 250g dry rye after Boil the Hydrate so the Jar looks half filled. Then i pressure cooked both Jars for 90 min at 15PSI let it cool over night with the Aluminum Foil cover on the lid. The lid a prepare with a Inception port and a 4mm Hole I screw it and cover the hole inside and outside the lid with a layer of micropore Tape.

The Liquid Culture i make 4 Day's ago looks Lotte cloudy but the Mycelium growing Super quick i give it every Day a shake with a magnet sirerer.

I think next week i think the LC is ready.. I know you will say test on Agar first I will but also will test it on my Grains at the same time so no time too loose when agar looks good i know the Grains are too.

What you think?
