I hard boil any cereal grain for 30 minutes until nice and soft and hydrated.

Heres stipes video.    Its super simple. 






It can also be helpful to start with boiling water.. go for about 20 or 30 minutes.

And then lower it a little bit. This will help you creep up to fully hydrated without bursting as many grains.

Just make sure you check them every so often.( squeeze cut or bite in half and look at this state of the inside. is it still white and starchy? or is it translucent and hydrated? That's what you're looking for.

I grabbed 8 of these today from work. Stainless steel, to rise the trivet. 4 should do but there were heaps laying around at the yard. Stoked I was able to find something like this right away haha.

It's starting to get cold where I live and the temperature in our house will soon be hovering around the high 50s to low 60s for a while before we start running our wood stove. I'm thinking about making an insulated box with a seedling heating mat to keep my jars and plates at a more optimal temperature. The heating mats have a temperature range of 70-85F. I was planning to line the box with reflective bubble insulation. Once we start running the wood stove consistently I'll remove the heating pad and move it next to the stove. I know that it's better to heat the room than the grow, but this is an economical compromise, otherwise they'll probably just stay cold with me.

My questions are:
Can I set spawn jars and agar plates directly on the mat, or should I put them on a slightly elevated wire rack, and maybe even put a towel on the rack to prevent direct heating?
Should I add some small ventilation holes for the spawn jars?
Should I add some kind of lighting? I've got some extremely underwhelming low powered grow light bars that run on a timer and I could add one to the box.

Those temps are perfectly fine. Things will jist move along a little slower.

Anways.    Dont use heating mats. 

If you do need to warm up a space then get your self a small space heater with a thermostat or an oil heater. And actually warm up the space safely..



Lol I skipped over the part where you have a wood stove.

then just grow the low temperatures until you're ready to fire up the wood stove..

that's what I would do personally unless you have a small space heater already and want to make it  more comfortable temperature for yourself..


I don't live in a place where it gets cold like that though. Kloakk what do you do?

I know this kinda off the walls question though has anyone done ph tests on different grain waters to get an idea of the ph of the grains themselves or are we all going blind?

Edit. I wonder if some of the stalled jars people r getting that are somewhat old jars or late bns are from early forced acidity of grains. During colonization it can bump ph down to 4 which will completely stall mycelium so it's possible maby we should work on a preemptive tek to increase colonization success by making a alkaline buffer somehow for the grains.

Love that tent setup. Unfortunately heating the room with electricity is a relatively expensive proposition. This house is miserably leaky. And I'm trying to save as much wood as possible for when it's -30 out this winter, so layers and blankets will do for me rn. The seedling mat in an insulated box is cheap, and I can probably run it on one of our small solar batteries for free.

Sounds like if I did decide to do this I'd want to keep them as isolated from the pad as possible. So a shelf with a towel sounds like the way to go. If I did a test run with a temperature probe to see what it kept the air temp in the box, what would be the max temp I'd want to see? Or is the idea just a no go? Happy to concede that. Just thought I'd see what I can do with what I've got. Slow is fine, but if I can do something about it I figure it's worth a try, so long as it's not more trouble than it's worth.

I used to have my SAB inside the big part of this tent(two room tent) and all the jars and plates where in the grow space of the room. I got some outdoor plant shelves because they had the plastic to keep dust of my jars.

When I got an FFU I didn't want it set up in a small space because the clean air would just bounce around and drag unclean air back to my working area, so the shelves got put in there because it's easier to heat the room inside the tent for better colonization temperature while the outside of the tent is cooler.

An insulated box will work if you set it up right. If you get a large enough tub you could insulate it with several things, thermal sheet and the heating pad between the tub and the sheet, or maybe one of those electric heat blankets. You could probably get away with the heating mat ontop of the tub and a normal blanket on top to cover the tub etc.

Mycelium is exothermic and will produce heat by themselves, probably a couple of degrees Celsius inside the jars. So the max you want to see is around 24°C(75°F)

Hi everyone hope u had a good day. Mine was hard, but it's over now. My quick question: if I add poo to my brf puck, then the poo can be fully sterilized no problem?

You can sterilize poo tho I think ppl only do that for all in ones otherwise they seuse veide or overbake or cold water pasteurize mixed with other materials

Yes if you have a PC, you can sterilize it, no problem

I like how the grow space has come together for the past two years, just know that I had a lot of the things before I started cultivating mushrooms, most of it is convenient and keeps things neat  but it's also totally unnecessary for cultivating mushrooms :lol:
