Scott's 3-n-1... quick question.

Well I finally got around to getting some of this stuff. Now i am wondering something. Can this be used as a substrate material? Perhaps combined with verm. Or is it best suited for spawning and casing? I am currently using it to case spawned dung, and it seems OK so far. But what if i loaded 3-n-1 into jars and innoculated? sorry for the newbie-ish questions peace

i would not, there's not much food in it, better yields would be gotten by spawning it w/grain, cakes, etc.

i've got several batches of 3-n-1 going, it's about 30% dung according to the bag i believe, the rest is topsoil & compost. so it's a bit on the weak side, food-wise. the mycellia does love it, colonizes it fast. but you'd surely want to use alot of spawn with it, or supplement it with some cottonseed meal, etc.

i agree with hippie, too. i use a quart and a half vermiculite and a quart and a half 3 in 1 in every mycobag and spawn that with a pint of fully colonized birdseed. it only takes about 8 days to colonize in an incubator.

Hippy,
If you want to "soup up" the content of 3N1? Simply find some cracked dry horse dung, tear it into small bits & presoak it in a container w/water. Them -- when soft -- stick some in a blended & blend into a very fine soupy slurry.
Hydrate your 3N1 with that slurry & pasturize it -- as usual. Then use as you wish. That will "soup up" the 3N1 with more nutrients.
