Being able to pour the agar while cool then PC sure sounds like it would make life easier, even if the lid isn’t clear.

i've tried 8oz mason jars (which obviously has more of an air reservoir) without filters, but they slow down and stall out before colonizing.  they begin growing again when the jar is opened and closed again, so filters are better.

those condiment cups are not sealed; they do provide some gas exchange, so the situations are different

I prefer the 8-oz, 1/2-pint, wide mouth jars.  More room to work, and everything is wide mouth that way, you can use the same filters/lids for your wide mouth quart grain jars that way.
