Do Petri dishes need some sort of FAE when used for agar?

Or do the lids leak enough to let some air in?

The glass ones, to be clear.

The air that's in there is plenty. Wrapped, with whatever you wrap with, parafilm, cling film, grafting tape, all good. Wrapped in cling film you'll get plins in a month or two.

I guess I’m confused about what purpose the wrapping serves if there’s enough air inside the dish? The dishes would be sealed without being wrapped, right? Or am I misunderstanding something here….

To keep sterile things sterile and to prevent premature drying out.

Some of the reusable dishes I use have a threaded lid. I don't bother wrapping those

The wrap keeps filthy bacteria and mold spore laden air from fucking up your plate.

I’m starting to wonder if the little 4oz mason jars might be the easiest option for agar….

Being able to pour the agar while cool then PC sure sounds like it would make life easier, even if the lid isn’t clear.

Pouring hot agar onto regular petri dishes sounds more simple and more space efficient to me atleast. having 10 plates stacked in your workspace is better than 10 jars i believe :sunny:

Nice, thanks for posting this. Im seeing pins on a plate I nocd up on 8/31 and I was wondering if there was enough air in there for it to finish maturing at least into a big pin I could close.

The first time I did agar dishes, i wrapped them around the top and bottom instead of around the sides 🤦‍♀️ one by one my plates all got contaminated until one night my eyes popped open like the squidward meme as I realized my mistake

I swab gills on mature plate fruits for ulta clean spores.

And I'm team cling film.

You want PP5 plastic. That's the stuff that can handle a PC cycle.

Nichrome says that some bacteria can make it through PP5 after multiple PC cycles. Specifically Psuedomonas. The plastic on my plates started becoming discolored after about a year, so I replaced them. I have yet to see proof of bacteria bypassing the plastic on my plate, but they're cheap enough that I don't mind replacing them every now and again.

I recall Faht had bacteria issues he tracked down to reusable plates.

I use the mason jars too
I give them a tiny fae hole and put micropore over it

Of course the intelligent grower does BRF pucks too, with cubes almost a given to get pins and fruits, clean af.:toast:

Throw pins right on to agar, or whatever, they're cleeeean.
