sterilizing petri dishes

I just had a quick question. is it possible to autoclave those little plastic petri dishes??? i'm afraid of them melting, or at least deforming at that temperature.

most all petri dishes can be placed in autoclave yes

depends on what you paid for them, under $10 for a sleve of 20, no
$35 and up for 10, yes.

okay, then another question...is running them through a dishwasher a few times on hot wash, with steam good enough? or do they need to be autoclaved.

need to be sterilised either with the pressure cooker or autoclave

I can not autoclave my plastic petri dishes. But in Rush Waynes book "Growing mushrooms the easy way" he writes how to sterilize them in the microwave oven: Clean them very well - put a drop of water and peroxide into the petris - microwave them till all water has evaporated - that's it. ( I guess it should also work without peroxide ... )

i guess i'll just spring for some new ones, after all they're just a couple bucks a sleeve (for the cheap plastic kind)

oh, and another thing....i know that peroxide kills fungal spores and what not...but will peroxide kill living bacteria...i'm trying to transfer some mycelium that was contamed with bacteria onto some new plates, but i wasn't sure that if there were live bacteria on the culture that i was going to use if the peroxide would kill them. or if bacteria could still survive on a peroxidated agar dish.

Well my friend you are in luck. This girl I know soaked 6 different contaminated jars (bacillus the suspected contam). In 3 different solutions. 2 jars were dunked in 1/20 H2O2 solution, left in fridge for 5 days and colonized agar with no problem. 2 were dunked in 1/100 bleach solution .... same fridge scenario ... colonized agar no problem.

THE most interesting were the two that were soaked in tea tree (melaleuca) oil ... they were left out of the fridge after each was left to soak in a 1/50 Tea tree oil solution. Tea tree oil is the most powerful natural antiseptic, and it worked great. Hope this helps!

thank you for the info...i did just that, i soaked the contaminated mycelium in H2O2 and transfered to some peroxidated agar...now, i'm just waiting to see what happens...i hope everything turns out great....i apreciate everyones help!!!

dont always believe Wayne, I tried to microwave a couple to reliquify some agar, the dishes melted in around 20 seconds, plastic is great but it's disposable. if you guys neen petris let me know, I gots a few extra

A microwave heats up (almost) only the water molecules. So if you put in empty plastic petri dishes the should not melt. But if there is to much hot agar in them the agar heats up the plastic and they will melt.

Update:

I just have tried it out: The plastic melts where it touches a hot surface. But it does not melt when it does not touch anything that heats up in the micro.
