Some of the reusable dishes I use have a threaded lid. I don't bother wrapping those

I’m starting to wonder if the little 4oz mason jars might be the easiest option for agar….

Being able to pour the agar while cool then PC sure sounds like it would make life easier, even if the lid isn’t clear.

I use the mason jars too
I give them a tiny fae hole and put micropore over it

Exactly what I was thinking.

TL/DR: plates don’t need fae.

I haven’t seen a team deli cup but I will join it when it forms.

I pour sterile agar into cups that are straight out of the packaging, in front of the ffu. The lids snap tight and the agar holds water for months. Plins flourish. Contamination rate is about 2%. They are pp5 lids and cups, 3.25 oz. Average pour is 12 ml.

I tried no-pour but it wasn’t worth the effort.  At about 0.08 usd/pair I recycle the cups rather than re-use.

I poured a bunch yesterday. They sit for a week to see which are grossly contaminated. There’s 134 plates in the photo, 40% grain water and 2% agar-agar.

Have fun!

I went for borosilicate 100 or 120mm big bois rather than delis and plan on living the mycology dream life so il reuse these 500 forever or that's the goal anyways 🥳

I'd be team deli cup though petris/no pours are just so damn pretty when the mycs clean  I prefer the extra view

I did an experiment to test just that.

I sealed agar and myc in a 4oz mason jar with no fae

2 weeks later it only colonized about a quarter of the agar

I opened up the jar to take a transfer to a new jar and sealed the jar back up

Come back 2 days later and the myc colonized about 90% of the agar in the original jar

This tells me that myc still love FAE even on agar

(This experiment was done in a LFH)

I think it has more to do with the low hanging gas that mycelium produces which mushrooms can't breathe through. They need air and in a sealed environment they will choke out on they're own gas buildup before all oxygen is used 😅 lwk if ur gonna do that test maby do that then flip the 4 oz jars upside down n let sit for 2 weeks n u might have more colonization or full colonization without fae

no, they DO need gas exchange.. (GE, not FAE)

co2 doesnt separate like that from o2.

i've tried 8oz mason jars (which obviously has more of an air reservoir) without filters, but they slow down and stall out before colonizing.  they begin growing again when the jar is opened and closed again, so filters are better.

those condiment cups are not sealed; they do provide some gas exchange, so the situations are different

Have u tested with a control jar and a upside down jar to see if there's a difference before stalling?

My only question is: why would that make a difference?

Im always a student of the game and willing to learn better ways of doing things

EDIT: my assumption is that you mean the CO2 will fall to the bottom of the plate, allowing the O2 to remain where the agar is, thereby allowing the myc to continue colonizing, however i was told that CO2 doesn't seperate/stratify due to gravity alone

This is an important point. The plastic used for cling film* is gas permeable, similarly the polystyrene used for condiment cups is also, and PP5 polypropylene (Pasty Plates etc.) is also gas permeable.

*Until ~20 years ago OG cling film maker Saran, and perhaps other makers, used PVDC- a type of polyvinyl chloride- for their cling film, which is effectively not gas permeable. Thus the idea that persists in some corners that certain brands are good, others bad. Environmental concerns caused Saran to shift to polyethylene.

This also explains why Saran doesn't cling nor preserve food like it used to.

Yes, thanks bluescreen and everyone for the info and discussion!

I’m still thinking I’ll probably go with the 4oz jars (non textured for visibility) and get the plastic lids that I’ll put a filter in. Being able to pour the agar cold then PC just sounds a lot easier….

I prefer the 8-oz, 1/2-pint, wide mouth jars.  More room to work, and everything is wide mouth that way, you can use the same filters/lids for your wide mouth quart grain jars that way.

Good point, it would be easier and a bit cheaper to use lids I’ve already got….

🤔

Look, I actually use short ~4oz jars myself, and while it's true that you save yourself "the risk" of contamination during the pour — it's also true that if your technique or workspace lacks sufficient sterility afterward, they'll get contaminated anyway.

There are also other drawbacks, like the space they take up (which our buddy already mentioned), making it pretty impractical as a solution for prepping a large number of "plates".

Then there's visibility — it's a real pain in the ass not being able to see the growth from above. The opaque lid of the jar also keeps you from shining light directly from above to view it from below.

The tall edges of a jar (even a short one) aren't exactly the most comfortable thing to work with either.

Is it functional? Absolutely, but it's also a bit clunky. I've also started pouring into recycled makeup containers and recently into condiment cups (out of necessity). The change is honestly a breath of fresh air.

If I have something "more important" to transfer, I might still opt for one of these jars and skip the pouring step (even if it's just a placebo), but trust me — I like them less and less every day.

So personally, I encourage you not to be afraid of pouring, or at least get yourself some autoclavable plates. At the end of the day, you have to open them anyway — so if they don't get contaminated then, you can pour without a problem.

And as for the filter — I don't use a filter on the lid. They stay upside down the whole time and colonize completely. That said, I never screw the lids on tight.

Hope this helps!

Hugs

The update to that post says the lids on them are 'defective' now, are they working for you?

Every once in a while I'll find mold around the edges, but only if I leave it in a room with a strong fan. It's not every plate, and storing them in a tub or a drawer helps a lot
