Cheap alternative to glass petri dishes at wally world *pics*
    #3972677 -

The look small, but they are fairly wide and great for petri use. 3.50$ for 4, so less than a buck a pop. Very easy to make a hole for a loop or syringe and cover with tape.

You can even just sterilize the agar right in there, not having to worry about pouring and skipping an entire step....

Very cool...

I guess I dunno...

They come in white 4 packs with the mason jars, cant miss em. But the wide mouth and base make a perfect petri dish. Considerably heavier glass too.

I have 29 Strains as of current.. I LOVE TO TRADE. See my bio for the strains I currently have.

I seek: Strains I don't have, exotic species, Edibles, Vacutainers, A accurate scale, chicken manure, worm castings, worms for making my own worm castings, plastic lids for mason jars, light malt extract, Kelp Meal, A Ph Tester, A microscope.

over a buck a pop + shipping, plus having to order online and wait, ummm I think this is a better alternative.. No more broken lids again ever :-)

Ohh and the taped hole for looping + no glove box pouring, umm yah.. I think this is way bettr!

yes, for some cheap plastic disposable dishes. Why have reoccurring unnecessary costs?

These jars work very good in the place of petri dishes. I have had 100% success rate with them.

I just mix my agar right inside the jar. Then PC, let cool, and inoculate in front of my laminar flow box.

I have had about a 50% contamination rate using the disposable petri dishes. What I don't like is after you open the package they are no longer guaranteed sterile. Pressure cooking them will melt and warp them. Plus after a while that adds up to a lot of plastic getting thrown away. Its more eco friendly to use glass or polymethylpentene dishes that can be sterilized in a PC.

But anyway, I would definetly recommend these little jars

Glass petri dishes are expensive. The disposable ones are cheap but you have to replace them after each use so its actually the most expensive.

Wrong.  Very wrong.

Disposable petri dishes cost less than what it costs in fuel and soap to wash the glass ones.  They're by far the cheapest, and when you're isolating strains, you need up to 100 dishes, so that's a LOT of money spent for nothing if one is using glass.  Leave the glass dishes to bio labs working with bacteria, and use disposable dishes for fungi.  It's the cheapest and most environment-friendly way of working.  I wouldn't use glass petri dishes or tiny jars even if they were given to me free.

Completely agree w/ the point you are making but at the same time,
a new grower can get started on agar using jars on hand, then move to plates with confidence.

(But more than a batch or two is going to cost more in agar then just getting dishes anyway.)

I guess the plastic is not made of fuel, the delivery truck runs on apple juice, and electricity is not nuclear or coal fired in NY? A bucket of suds doesn't cost $0.10 ($0.12 a Kw). I wash 400 dishes often and would never go back to plastic (and only broke 4 this entire year (1000s of plates)). They are $2 on ebay for 90mm (borosilicate).
