Hello, everyone. Im such a noob its embarrassing, but I'm dumb interested in bispos. I was gifted some prints and will be putting them to agar soon, but I'm a planner so I have questions about what to expect:

Is casing really necessary? Why or why not? For some reason, casing seems really complicated to me and Id rather skip it if possible.

Also, what the hell even is overlay? Ive only heard it spoken of in a fhread where users were arguing about what it is. No consensus was met.

Any sources, resources, reading, anything would be greatly appreciated.

Ty.  They’re stand alone chambers.  They just sit on an open wire shelf

This is the tek called the FAHTLOCK


They’re a bit different than the zipblocks for cubes.  Different hole set up and have specific environmental needs so they’ll be getting their own thread at some point soon.. part of an all encompassing pan thread and what I’ve found to work

It is possible to grow pans without a casing, but most people use it because it acts as a protective layer of moisture that is beneficial to pinning.

Some people use a low-nutrient seed starter mix like Jiffy. I've used it straight from the bag and still got a flush. Other people choose to pasteurize and/or adjust it's pH.

Overlay is when the mycelium grows a thick layer on the surface of the substrate. It can sometimes inhibit pin formation. A good casing can prevent overlay because the mycelium senses the different pH of the casing and uses it as one of its triggers to start pin formation.

I'm pretty sure a casing traps Co2 at the surface, which is also important for pin formation. TreeFrog used to post in this thread a lot. If you search for her Username you can read all her posts and comments. Lots of good info there.

IMO, pans grow the best with a pasteurized nitrogen-fortified substrate and a pasteurized pH adjusted casing. You can certainly grow them without either, but flushes will be small and inconsistent with a higher rate of failure. Most of the people getting good flushes in not ideal conditions put a lot of work into their genetics or are mushroom-gods who can get a full flush with nothing but a print and two rubber bands.

The biggest thing with pans is the cleanliness of your culture. It's probably the single most important aspect. You should be prepared to go back to spore multiple times. A lot of people, including myself tend to start over if a culture isn’t looking good by T2/T3. If it it doesn't look nice by then, it wont ever look nice.

I'll also add RoscoeReturns's dehydrator tek for pasteurizing casing material: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28297179. This tek made the process less scary for me, and it fit my small scale approach.

Water tub hybrid is mostly done.




I still need to figure out where to put my humidity sensor. Anywhere I would normally put it has holes pretty close by. I think I might wait until it's running and I see how much condensation builds on the lid. If it's minimal, I'll probably put it there.

Definitely going to need a lot of dialing in. If the holes up top let out too much humidity, I'll stuff them with polyfill. I'll probably tweak fae using a house fan on a timer.

The main goal of this is to have a set and forget setup. I'm almost never home, so I need something that doesn't need to be constantly fussed over.

I'm PCing some grain for pans right now. So I should be able to run a test in about 2-3 weeks depending on my work schedule.

HEY fahtster, in your CV+ recipe, when you're adding ingrediants to the coir has the coir already been hydrated ala bucket tek or is this dry coir straight from a brick? 

I'm really looking forward to your ziplock tek write-up.  After seeing the pictures you posted I'm going to make that my go to for growing pans.  It's perfect for personal use.

Each tray has:
40g coir
1/2 cup verm
1/2 cup worm castings
1.25ml of each true organic liquid ferts 2-2-2, and jackpot micro nutrients
1.25 cup water (this can be a little shy depending on how hydrated your coir already is off the block.  I’ve had to add up to a 1/4 cup more at times.  I’ll squeeze test it when I’m making the trays and if they’re a little light, I’ll mist more water into the mix and do more tests until I’m satisfied it’s at FC)

I boil the water with both ferts in it.  Once it starts boiling, I pour it into the coir and stir.  Should have np instantly hydrating all the coir as theres excess water (to hydrate the verm and worm castings).  Then add the verm and stir and let sit to cool down below 140F.  I just let it sit for like 20 mins.  I like to compact the CV down to try and equalize the water content throughout

Then I add the castings and mix.  I use an xl ziplock (I use the XL because I make enough for 3 trays at once—if you’re doing only a single tray, you’d only need a gallon ziplock if you’re going that route) and close it up with air in it and shake the shit out it.. then compact it down in the bag (again to equalize the water and force it into the castings).. do that a few times and pasteurize.  I prefer to vac seal pasteurize.. removing the air helps conduct the heat to the center more evenly and faster.  It also equalizes the water content throughout the sub.  If you do vac seal pasteurization, make sure you open the bags right way and let air in after it’s done.  A sealed bag will go sour if you don’t.

If you test FC right after you make the sub, it’ll appear over hydrated.  Don’t test for FC until it’s either done pasteurizing or it’s sat for a while before pasteurizing; giving the material enough time to absorb all the water
