Practice, Practice, Practice (1st timers plz. read)

This is not a post so much as it is a personal observation. If it is your first time growing, I don't think things like: how many grams of mushrooms will I get from each cake/casing, or how to set up a fully automated grow chamber should be on your mind. Growing mushrooms moreso than other hobbies requires a lot of personal/hands-on experience. I went through the standard PF formula 3 times through before I felt ready to take on casings, outside patches, etc. Its helpful because using the old "birthday cake" method familiarizes you with the mushrooms life cycles, needs, and precautions you need to take. Everyone has different conditions to work with, some need to be more careful w/ contams. some less, for some pins seem to pop up no prob. others can't get pins at all. Basically what I think I am trying to say is that you should not worry about the end result until you have familiarized yourself with the process that works for you. Luckily mushies are not expensive to grow and trial and error is not a big deal. Have patience and be inspired by the methods that you read about on shroomery and all the other great sites out there. It may take time, but real success will be had once you have a tek all your own. Good luck and happy shrooming!

I would like to add, Don't be afraid to try stuff. But do the cakes first!

I am still a newbie and I started my first grow with 12 1/2 pint cakes, 24 WBS Jars, and 3 Karo teks. The second grow I am trying to use agar to isolate a strain.

Read everything and start with the beginner stuff. But do not be afraid to do beginner, and intermediate at the same time. It is a good way to judge what level will be a challenge for you.

NOTE: I had 3 contaminated jars from my first run of 36 jars. I felt that I was pretty good with the beginner and intermediate so I tried the advanced (agar). The first try with 6 agar plates got me 5 contaminated plates and 1 good one. The second try reversed it with 5 good and 1 contaminated.

It is all about what YOU feel comfortable with. Don't worry about quantity per cake. If you do 6 cakes you can easily get enough for a couple of people to use, But you gain valuable knowledge.

Heck I still do PF jars to make sure I get a good spore print. Nothing beats it!

i agree with cyber...
i've been wanting to grow for a LONG while now!
but only now i get the chance... since i knew i was going to grow i've been reading like crazy to be totally ready for when my print finelly comes (luckly i've got a three week trip in the middle so i wont have to sit and wait too much...) and i already know i'm gonna be doing at least 8 jars of PF and also a jar of honey so i wont have to wait for the grown mushrooms...
after that i can innoculate whatever i want whenever i want... and i can't see how i can mess that up even if i am a first timer!

I dont know, I think some people can pick up things faster and dont need to go through such a tedious process. I started right off with grain and am doing great with it. I did almost a year of research first but its only been 3 weeks and I've got tons of quarts of substrate to case, I've got some quarts cased (small casings using 1/4 of a quart up to larger casings using 7 quarts) of different strains, done grain to grain transfers by the dozen, I've done agar work which was simple, gotten fully colonized plates (10 of 10), I'm currently making progress on issolating a bad syringe I got, just did the 3rd generation transfer last night which should be clean. And a few days ago I started work on Tampanensis ("magic truffles") in rye berries and rye grass in both jars and bags. Showing signs of growth yesterday and no signs of contams. I've had no contams on agar or grain or grass in jars, plates or bags yet except for my GT syringe which produced nothing but green and very little white and I know wasnt me and have had excellent results as of yet.

I think you need to start at your capacity but I think some need to jump in a little deeper then others. I very well could get contamination to ruin my crop or have horrible fruiting conditions and such but I have looked into what I will get for yields because I'm curious..I cant go a day without taking out every jar and inspecting everything. And either way Ill be learning. I dont see how you gain any more knowledge from a PF cake going green or a grain of jar going green. All that time spent practicing cakes then practicing casing then finally really doing it "for real" could have been spent trying it out "for real" just jumping to grains and casing them. Even if you fail a couple times before succeding you still could be ahead of where youd be going though baby steps.

Not saying that some shouldnt start there, if thats where your comfortable but you shouldnt discourage people who feel comfortable jumping into grains from doing it just because you werent. I've managed so far and this will segue into bulk straw and poo in a few weeks. This is where I felt the beginning for me was and if others feel the same I think they should do the same. Say I'm in over my head and will realize soon if you want but IMHO, ambition shouldnt be discouraged.
