1st time casing, how was your success?

i just got through casing my first cakes. finally had time to do it this weekend. this round i only cased a total of (4) cakes into 2 seperate 8inx3inx2in loaf pans, (2) cakes per pan (cambos) i am experimenting with the hongus tek, i have my peat moss, but no lime or calcium yet, wallys and kmarts doesnt carry it and garden shops arent open on sundays and it will be next weekend before i probably have the time to buy some. anyways my question is: the first time you cased what was your success rate? basically i did it all over the oven, i baked my verm for 25 mins at 250 degrees, used the correct amount of spring water, washed my hands everytime i handle anything and used a sterilized fork to break up the cakes (which was very difficult lol) after i broke the cakes up into 4 pieces i went back and hand broke them into 2 more pieces getting 8 pieces total (washed my hands each time) know i did notice a little bluing on my last cake after i broke it up, im assuming i bruised it, but i removed those pieces, other than that, i saran wrapped them up and threw them in the closet which is also doubling as an incubater (heat rises) the only thing i did different is the casing layer is a little thicker than an inch maybe a little over an inch, but i have time so im in no great big hurry. can i have your success story please, even if it wasnt with the hongus tek. thanx! ps and after i finished doing this, that wonderful faq put together by anno and the other members came to my attention GREAT JOB GUYS wish i saw it before i cased my babies! peace

Sounds like you have nothing to worry about. My first casing was a success.

right now im using the hongus' tek. verm only right? i'll let you know how it goes...i couldn't get to the store and i only had verm. you didnt have to get rid of those bruised pieces....i just use my hands to break it all up (being clean of course). and i break mine up a little more, i just crumble it all up, but leave big chunks too.

in the first one, i did 50/50 with some CaCo2 Second casing was pretty much the same thing, just used lime instead of CaCo2 Casings own. The tricky part is keeping the moisture in them proper. You need trial and error to figure this one out. -j

Honestly, i don't know what is the Hongus Tek I don't see why you shouldnt succeed. I believe the KEY to casings is proper moisture content. Thats the trickiest part. As per your casing materials, i think you should use 50/50+, it's the best. Only thing I can tell you, is when I cased a 1/2 pint cake, I broke it down real nice, into fairly fine pieces, and kinda pressed them together so they form a nice big chunk of mycelium. I have since evolved into using grains, I still have a couple cakes that are like 100% colonized in 1/2 pint jars. I innoculated them in late November, and I still havent birthed the as I have no real need for them... they are fruiting invitro tho hehe... My second casing was EQ on Millet. I think Millet is fuckin amazing, produces some amazing fruits, very plentiful. check out this thread for some of my grain experiments Rye+Millet pix I also posted there how I did it. Give it a shot if you haven't already. -joker

sorry i dont know how to post a link within but here goes [link]www.mycotopia.net/teks/hongus.html [/link] check it, and like i stated before, i want to try the 50-50 but i wont have time to get to the garden center till saturday, work too much during the week. i believe my terranium will have enough moisture in it to keep the casings hydrated, and i really do want to 50/50 for my other 20 cakes.

ok, i see I've read this tek before... nothing too special or unique, just a basic casing tek. If you want to be lazy and want to case now rather than wait a week, you can case with just 50/50 Do an experiement, specially since you got 20 cakes left, youll have plenty of chances to use a 50/50+ mix... The + is NOT REQUIRED... it's not bad to have, but you'll have great results with just 50/50 ... give it a shot I would recommend a thinner casing layer, like 1/4" - 1/2" See how that works for you... Also all strains react differently to casing layers... some will rip thru a 1.5" casing layer, as others will barely surface through a 1/2" -j

i guess thats the wonderful thing about being a 1st timer and having a bunch of cakes to play with, the cakes i am currently cultivating are lipas and cambos, do you know how they do with about an inch of a casing layer and felix what strain are you doing?
