Recommendations for 1st Casing

Of my 3 jars, 2 are 95% colonized and one is 100% colonized. I'd like to try and make a casing from the one which is fully colonized and grow the other two with the cake tek.
I was thinking of using small glass bowl, and I'd like to try using some verm/peat moss with a 50/50 % mixture. How much water is needed in the mixture? Also, how do i go about sterilizing the mixture? I've heard some people talking about baking it first? Can anyone recommend good links for successful casing for cambo's?
Oh, I'm including a pic of the 100% colonized jar. Is this a good tim eto case it?
Thanks!

its easier and quicker to put moist verm in a bowl and stick it in the microwave for 1-2 min (max) vs boiling for 1 hour. it will get madd hot and even expand a lil. then when you open the door it shrinks back down; its sterile. just DONT make your casing later wet. just a small amount of moisture is really all you need.

Again a first time caser would have better luck with a straight verm layer, no sterilizing needed with sealed bag brands..If you want to use a 50/50 sterilizing can be acomplished with any type of heating...Boining,microwaving, canning like you did your jars, baking ect...I like the keep it simple stupid methods for 1st timers though, the less steps the less room for error............

actually i think i like egoless's idea better, just straight vermiculite for casing, since that seems the most simple for the first time. Maybe I can try this later?

What difference does the 50/50 add?

not too sure razer. Some people seem to think it may promote fruiting. I still like the simple verm. only casing idea. Think I'm going to stick w/ it for my first time.

beppo,
took your recommendation on using the microwave to sterilize the casing substrate (100% verm.). man that stuff takes forever to cool off. I added just a little bit of tap water, mixed it into the verm, and microwaved it for about 3 minutes. Took like 30 mins for it too cool down to room temperature. From all I"ve heard about heat damage, i felt i'd better be safe and let it cool down a lot before I used.
so, i used a small aluminum-foil type dish (pre-made for baking) type and baked with 1/2" of dry verm. on the bottom for 40 mins at 400 deg. Then took out and let cool down to room temp. then took the 100% colonized cake and broke it up into smaller pieces and made a layer of white substrate over the verm. layer. Then took the cool sterilized damp verm and lightly sprinkled over the substrate until completely covered (probably 1/2" or so.) Covered w/ aluminum foil and made two small holes about the size of a regular pen.
I also took a very small amoun tof the while substrate and placed into a second casing. Not sure if this will work out or nto, but figured i'd give it a shot.?
Ok now, just looks like i need to lightly mist every day into the casing mix until pinning occurs. Correct?
Thanks again! :) Looking forward to seeing these beauties grow. Looks like my other two jars are just about ready to birth as well.

oh, btw, this was the first chance I've had to smell the substrate. I was surprised how sweet smelling it was. Pretty strong too! :) this is getting fun!

If it took that long for the casing substrate to cool down just think about how nice and cozy it'll be keeping the baby mushrooms while they grow. I'm excited for you - I just ordered some spores and will be trying out a few casings myself (I also happen to be a casing virgin). Good luck from a fellow Seattleite - Keep the pictures coming!

heya fungichick,
cool to see other fellow mushie parents from seattle. I figure why should I gow walking around outside in the rain looking for little mushrooms when I can have them growing in my room house. :)
Well, it's been a day since i did the casing, and so far so good. Smells good too. Wish ya luck on your casings. It's really pretty easy. My only hint would be to leave like 45-60mins for the damp verm. to cool down after microwaving it for 2-3 mins to sterilize it. I wasn't expecting a >1hr job on the casing, but guess that's how it goes. Maybe next time, I'll microwave, cover w/ foil, and put in the fridge for a bit too cool it off first. Don't wanna fry the mycelium.
Oh, also, noticed some small pinning this morning in one of my jars. yippie! :) Still trying to figure out exactly what to do w/ it though, since the jar isn't 100% colonised yet. I just added a post for it.
take 'er easy...
