best strain for 1st timer?

soon i will use pf-tek to grow my 1st shrooms. ive heard B+ is foolproof but weak. i want to grow puerto rican....what are everyone's thoughts on what a potent strain for beginers would be? thanks

P.R`s are slow colonizers .. slow growers in my opinion. I`d go with Ecuadors for my first try. They colonize fast in the jars and are quite potent . Try Dark Rye flour also. You`ll be surprised how fast mycelia grows in it compared to BRF

spot on with the rye flour shit - but the puerto rican isolate from Sporeworks is sooo fast - it was second only to lipas... It takes a while to germinate, but its pinning a week later with the right temps... PRs are great for a beginner if your using a sporeworks isolate - ive never seen a strain pin invirto so much!

so rye flour tends to work better than brf? why does the pk-tek only talk about brf? can i use hydrogen peroxide in the preparation?

just a little question. i'm in the beginning of my first time growing ever. using the PF tek, I innoculated with sporeworks/ P.R. syringes 6 days ago. i've only got one jar with a quarter sized mycelium growth. it's been at 84-88 degrees the whole time and i definitely didn't kill the spores by putting them into hot jars, the jars cooled a day+ before i innoculated. is something else going wrong, or by slow germinating do you mean the first mycelium takes a while to show up but then things progress quickly?

don't worry about it... just give it time - patience is the key.. once they germinate i'd imagine that (due to previous statements), the jars will colonize quickly. oh yea, make sure they got enough ventilation as well - good luck!<br><br>? ? ? -????? O ?????-? ? ? ?

Rooster........ 6 days... quarter size mycelia?.... Geokills.... 10 days to germination?..... man-o-man.. Try Ecuadors and dark-rye flour.... belive me. I`ve seen signs of mycelia in 3 days... 72 hours... and full colonized 1/2 pint jars in 10 days !!!!!!!!!.........Not quite sure what Bluemeanie means by"Spot on with the dark rye flour shit" must be ne w lingo i don`t know about

I agree with the Thais. My cat innoc with Thai KS and germinated in three days! But there wasn'nt enough gas exchange and growth slowed for a week but then fully colonized in 18 days! (would have been 11 but the damn cat suffocated the jars) Go with Thai or EQ or Cambo. fast and FAT! yeah

What do you mean by lifting the lids? Are you talking about the container you placed the jars in or the lids on the jars themselves? As of now I have 12 half-pint jars that I inoculated with Cambodian spores on monday, stored in a rubbermaid container, in 80-82 temps. Still no growth yet.

i am also playing the waiting game. my friends cat innoculated on tues with k.s. and still no signs of growth. in the past, jars have started earlier but five days is not unheard of. As for "breathing" removing lids seems risky for pf jar. Jar could get contaminated or dry out. leaving innoculation holes untaped and caped loosely with foil seems like a safe alternative. Back in college foil was used to cover agar slants with no contaims. in early days had success with holes all taped. i have read too many reports of faster growth with more air to continue that tek though.

DOnt tak the lids off...Just take the tape off the holes and cover with an alcohol to filter the air

Go with EQ's or B+. The B+ are not "weak". Who told you that? Also, stick with the PF tek to the letter as far as getting
your jars colonized. You may also want to try and case a few in addition to the cakes. Try a verm only tek for your first case.

by lifting the lids i mean unscrew them a little bit so that more air can get into your jars... if you have two piece lids - tape the disk part to the band and proceed as stated above... however, this will make allow for a greater chance of contamination (if you put a dry layer of verm on the top of your substrate i wouldn't worry too much about contams, just don't put your mouth on the jar and try to play it like a whistle and you'll be fine :wink:) - probably just go with the innoculation holes un-taped and wait it out to be safe.

Id agree - go with eqs or a thai strain - Many B+ isolates around seem a little old in that they seem to be slow to colonise and pin in my experience - and B+ are weak because cubensis in general is not as potent as many psilocybes...

With the Puerto Ricans I had germination in just over 2 days, full colonization in 9 days, in vitro pinning at 16 days, mature fruits at 23 days.

The mycelium is obscenely rhizomorphic... it looks like the jars are full of chopped-up dental tape. The most aggressive mycelium I have ever seen... it even colonized the dry vermiculite barrier at the top of the jars... a veritable fungal pit bull.

If you choose to case them, use a thick casing layer, because the mycelium just RIPS through 50/50 + casing and will overlay unless you use AT LEAST an inch and a half thick layer.

Contams? How can any contam get a chance to get started?

Seriously, the Puerto Ricans are pretty much impossible to fuck up. They just want to GROW!
