I had seen many others make the same mistake, so I put water and ISO in very different bottles, and it has saved me more than once.

Yeah mine are in the same exact bottle  they're labeled with sharpie, but clearly not well enough lol. I immediately wrapped the iso bottle in tape, hopefully that differentiates them sufficiently. Just glad it was an oyster block I wasn't very emotionally invested in. It was also only 2 sprays and I wiped down the walls of the bag after, so it might be fine. But a funny mistake nonetheless.

I've done that before, but the block did eventually recover and kept on truckin despite the fuckup.  Though, giving it a healthy spray of water straight after may have helped in that.  Diluted the fungicidal maniac enough that it contained the damage.

That's what I get for keeping those bottles so close together and running on autopilot during a misting sesh.  Ain't makin that mistake again, lol.

Good morning everyone. :goodmorning:

I'll confess there are two things that confuse me a little — one that surprises me less and one that surprises me more.

The first is that within a psychonaut community, or a community gathered primarily around something that leads to ego dissolution — whether partial or total — the same dynamics that appear in almost any other technical hobby still seem to take hold.

• People who share knowledge genuinely
• People who use knowledge as social currency
• People who use production as a status marker
• People who are invisible and learning in silence

I'm clearly aware that this is precisely how an ecosystem functions, but it still strikes me as surprising and honestly very interesting to observe.

The second, from a completely different angle, is the one that surprises me more. It's the heavy emphasis on preserving specific genetics/colonies through cloning and replication.

I understand that phenotypic stabilization work — or stabilization of other characteristics — is arduous and often not the most productive path in terms of harvested weight. But isn't it actually the only way to achieve real stabilization of a selection?

I also find myself wondering about agar — are the colonies that achieve dominance on this particular medium the same ones that would show dominance directly on another type of substrate?

For example, the productivity of a genetic line can be stabilized through continuous cycles of selection and recombination. So isn't replicating the same colony until senescence a bit of a waste of time?

I ask and share this from a place of genuine uncertainty.

Hugs

#1 what about this observation do you find particularly interesting?

I assume from context you talk on the idea that a sort of 'expanded perception' focused hobby/lifestyle as mush cult -for example- would naturally move away from typical social dynamics.
If so, I'll just say the commonality of course is that it's humans doing it, and we're gonna!
:mentos:

for part #2:

Quote:
But isn't it actually the only way to achieve real stabilization of a selection?

Yes, as far as I'm aware.

Quote:
are the colonies that achieve dominance on this particular medium the same ones that would show dominance directly on another type of substrate?

Well, colonies who show a tendancy to cooperate with one another on agar/in the initial stages of life will continue to do so. Whether they 'dominate' another substrate with as much vigour depends on factors, of course, like nutrient competition, suitablity of environmental conditions etc.

So, soft no to that question IMO but starting/selecting strong has clear advantage.

So isn't replicating the same colony until senescence a bit of a waste of time?

Yeah.

Thanks Lithop for your response.

Exactly — humans doing it is the constant.

What I find specifically interesting is the dissonance — the tool itself, the experience, seems designed to interrupt precisely those patterns. And yet here we are. Which raises the question of whether integration actually changes anything at the behavioral level, or whether the insight stays compartmentalized.

^that's where I land with that subject
But I do sometimes share in your eyebrow raising around it.

I think integration, as a process, can change things at a behavioural level so long we hold up our end of the bargain.

I think it also became a buzzword of sorts for people trying to bring back souveiners from peak experience to disown parts of 'normal' life and remain higher than their suffering.
In such case, I offer that my experience with psychedlic borne integration that really allows space for change in me is often more like psychic scabs, strain, effort than a sort of hollywood healing where things improve merely by knowing an alternative.
Plus, most times I got an 'easy to integrate lesson', the more stubborn parts of myself have managed to make it a tool to realise their own agendas IE: reify unhelpful character traits, beliefs, opinions, habits and so on.

All that to say, I see broad examples of how myself & other people integrate their psychedelic experience and the path - shockingly- seems non linear and very fluid. The difference between compartmentalised insight you mention, and embodying it pretty much lies in the choice we make moment to moment & how habitual it becomes.
We're often working with stubborn stuff.

I did it to a shoebox. Misted the hell out of it! Left it open for a few hours and it ended up doing OK.

Same thing, same bottle for iso and water; graduated to these for water misting.

Bel, we clean up and select cultures on agar, but the merits of these cultures are only proven on substrate. So it's a dialectic process of ensuring clean and even growth on agar, and checking the selected colonies for output / pheno on sub. Or cloning the best performer on sub, back to agar, etc.

As to the ego / status bs, it's a damn shame, but like Lithop says, humans be humans. Most people don't integrate their trip insights at all, or adapt them to everyday reality. I've seen people have profound insights on, say, the animal industry or gender roles, only to eat a hamburger while their wife does the vacuming, the week after.

Active users, here on the boards, bash gay or trans people or engage in pissing contests, when it would seem natural that ego dissolution would prove the futility of those concepts. (We are all the same stuff behaving differently and the universe doesn't give a crap about your dick size or whether you're 'right' or 'wrong'). Everyone who grew a few tubs of cubes knows that it doesn't even matter much if you tweak your process to max out harvests. You're never going to eat all of that anyway. It's fun and games but the performative aspect is ultimately useless.

Hallucinogens have the potential to open people's eyes, but most prefer to close them after the experience
My pardon if that sounds really sour and grumpy.

Personally, I think the spiritual aspect is overstated. Sure they were used in spiritual practices in the past, but those could be easily explained by people noticing biological effects and conceptualizing them with the only framework available to them: Spirituality

All of us have Egos. All of us have trauma. IMO, they are essential survival mechanisms that have evolved over billions of years. If the village idiot says that stores of a poisonous berry will feed the tribe through the winter, survival needs someone to say "You're a fucking idiot". Ego is the primary driver behind that mechanism. Being right doesn't remove ego from the equation.

You just have to look at some of the cult discussions that have spiraled into flame wars to see that mushrooms do nothing to improve Egos when considered in a vacuum. They might open doors to explain why we react the way we do on a personal level, but the individual has to be the one to put in the work in order to transfer those lessons into real life. Even then, a moment of weakness can pull people right back into the habits they worked so hard to change.

I guess what I'm saying is that ego is hard wired into our brain and perhaps the most egocentric thing anyone can think is "I have conquered my ego". It's like saying "I have conquered my need for oxygen". It's just not possible and raises red flags in my mind just from the pure absurdity of it.

not everyone is doing therapy, and even then ymmv, reporting is all subjective, terms like ego are fictions, the yearning for a magic bullet is great and etc. one of the first traps I think in using psilocybin for therapy is expecting that everyone involved with it is going to be instantly transformed into a spiritually and morally superior being  drugs are really interesting but it's our brains that are the abominable mystery imho

I've thought long about this.  Psychological integration doesn't inherently change behavior, nor does it automatically "stick".  You can't just expect psychedelics to make you a better person, it takes work.  It literally takes practice. The drugs have a proven method of showing us new neural pathways and new ways to think about things, but its ultimately still a choice as to whether or not we continue to think about things that way.  Compartments are are either created or destroyed by our own volition.

The same can be said with regard to these sortof pitfall aspects of social dynamics you're describing with our community.
Yeah, you find the same sortof archetypes of people in any community around a hobby. I'm also part of communities around my guitar/effects building hobbies, but its not even close to an apples to apples comparison.

This is one of the closest and most intimately connected communities i've ever found and by comparison is almost devoid of the kinds of pitfalls you're talking about (but not devoid obviously)

The only other community that comes to mind is the ALANON community. those people are tightly nit but I've seen first hand the gatekeeping and domineering.  They tend to carry their little coins around on their coat-sleeves.

I agree with ya, Beef. I also find that hasty use of psychedelics often have less therapeutic benefit. When used with intention and a desire to make positive changes in ourselves, I find them to "work" better. That could just be my experience, though.

The problem I've occasionally run into has been chasing the results I had early in my journey. It was so profound and really was life-changing. I need to remind myself that not every step in the process is going to feel like the last and that doesn't mean progress isn't still being made.
