I have a fahtlock with these Cambodian cubensis mushrooms, which seem to be opening their caps super early, I was hoping for them to get a lot bigger :frown:.

I understand that overhydrated substrate can cause this, but I used a scale to calculate the water required so I’m not sure if that’s the cause.

Could it be a genetic thing? I may go back to spore if so.

Thanks

Genetics can play a part, some just like throwing little guys out then bigger ones on the next flush. I think you have a little time before they fully open and drop spores, maybe another day or 2. You might be surprised at how much the swell in that time.

How do you differentiate between luecistic and albino Ochras? I don't have a microscope to check spore colour. Are there any other tell tale signs?

I would do a new transfer anywhere from 9 to 3 o'clock and get uniform growth before sending to grains. If you want you could always send a wedge from the same area to grains when you do the transfer if you're feeling spicy :awedance:

wait holy shit. in my head, you have to wait until the whole plate is colonized before putting anything in the grain... but you're saying I can take a healthy, sexy lookin' chunk of myc off a plate and yeet that bitch in there if I'm feeling spiced up insane-o style?

Agar is really just a way to see what you're growing before you stick it in some grains. Good uniform growth, along with other signs are indicators that you're only growing what you're aiming for. If you're feeling confident/spicy, you can throw whatever the hell you want in some grains, doesn't mean you'll get the results you want though!

Sure, and actually I don't want the whole plate to be colonized when I send it to grains, I have about 1cm of uncolonized agar when I send it.

And also yes, I send a wedge to grains all the time, even from T0 plates, because I'm ready to get something going and I don't mind losing a jar, for the most part it works out great as long as the wedge I used looked good.

This is how a plate looks when I send it to grains.

For the most part I use 55mm plates that is going to grains and send one wedge to each jar.

Well I can't relate to the birdbutt fetish, but yes, in my language Kloakk translates to sewer in English and it makes sense that the birds all purpose hole is named what it is :muppet:

I'm planning on doing bags for the first time. Inoculation will be with LC/Li.

1. If injecting and not doing g2g, do you seal the bags b4 PCing?

2. Where do I create the SHIP? Above the grain, so I can squirt it in the same manner as doing jars and then shake, or on the same level as grain? I've seen a lot of photos/videos of people making the SHIP where the grain is, which doesn't look the best to me as you can't distribute the liquid that well if you're injecting it in the middle of the grain ...

Tnx : )

If you seal the bags you risk compromising the filter, bag stretching or even burst in the PC :uhoh:

You can make a ship wherever you want, many just poke a hole in the bag with the needle and put tape over the hole.
I prefer to free pour :awedance:

Even when the ships are down in the middle of the grain.  Distributing it is  quite easy.

just stick your needle in  and move aim it in  whichever direction you want and squirt that shit all around. And then if you really want it to be distributed even more.  as soon as you're done give it a little Shake/massage.  and make sure all of that shit's covered.

Both my Hillbillies and Melmacs are producing bigger fruits each flush, but they aren't fruiting everywhere. My Melmacs only produced 2 on its second flush, and these are the pics of my Hillbillies. What am I doing wrong?

Ah, I missed your reply!

Hm, okey, the filter is too restrictive to airflow?

Yeah I've read that people just poke the bag ... I guess scotch tape is axenic?

Later flushes will produce fewer but bigger fruits and is very common, you might not be doing anything wrong. How was the first flushes and are you working with MS genetics?

At least the 3 micron filters are and the 5 micron is a gamble in terms of unwanted organisms coming through the filter. If the bags are folded properly they will be vacuum sealed when you open the PC and if you seal them while everything is still hot you won't have a problem and even if you let them cool down in the PC before sealing them it should be fine.

I do it hot because the bags cool fast and it feels safer.

After they're sealed you can hang them and they will be filled with air through the filter when they are cool enough to be inoculated and you will have no problem shaking and mixing the liquid inoculant.

Scotch tape is most likely fine indeed, just use it in a way with minimal time from the tape separating from the roll until it goes on the bag to be extra safe.

Tnx mate, appreciate the pics. Interesting how you hang them, is there a specific reason why?

Taking them out hot is kinda a bit more risky as cold air gets pulled in to the bag. That doesn't worry you?

I use sealer sticks instead of an impulse sealer because they don't sell them in my country and the import and shipping is aweful, other then that no particular reason.

Like I said the bags are vacuum sealed when you open the PC, I just lift up the top of the bag and put a sealing stick on it, only way for air to get in the bag is through the filter.

Even if you let it cool down inside the PC the bags will be vacuum sealed when you open it up and the bags won't open easily just by handling them, you have to tear the sides of the bag apart for it to open at all, so no I don't worry about any air coming inside a vacuum sealed bag.

If you look at this video from Stipe-n Cap you'll get a better look at what I mean, if you just want to see how the bags come out after a PC run start at 5:30.

Tmx, I saw that video yeah. Regarding air coming in, I'm just being precocious. Maybe there's a hole in the filter or what not ┐(∵)┌

Anyway, tnx.

What's the current meta on grain bags? I have a few medium sized ones I never used. Yoshi no prep seems to work based on a few pics I saw. Was wondering what your experiences were.

I need to get a sealer though, or is an iron alright?

I also just saw that my bag seems to have come dismantled, like I need to seal the sides up. Is that normal?

edit: oops good timing for the question

More Questions:

1- Two cakes are almost certainly contaminated. First one I know is a mold. Not sure about the second.

From MS, either yeast or mold, not cube myc although cube myc was showing at the bottom :l

From LI, this container was ran vertically, got smooshed up on one side, and there was even a piece of micropore tape on the lid to cover a break, so no surprise. There's a hint of red as well, perhaps from ground up Milo but it aint look right.

2- This Penis Envy x Ghost tub on straw. These genes unfortunately output a lot fo weird growths, although normally I get proper shrooms as well. They have not gone past pin stage.

Worth ripping up the surface with a glove, punishing, and seeing if they do round two?

3- These were from a contaminated tub, I procrastinated harvesting them, which might've been in mistake. The reddish coloring when dried, and looks like it was eaten by bacteria at some places, looks like pseudomonas right?

That means they are tossers? Or still edible?
