Newbie here, I don’t own a pressure cooker.

Hey all, I recently got into growing actives for therapeutic purposes and had a bunch of equipment readily available to do so. I’ve been looking to subsidize expenses and don’t own a pressure cooker to make my bags/jars for grain. I know it’s a heavily debated topic but is a water bath comparable in end results? Everything I’ve seen states longer boil than w/o pressure cooker but I’ve got rain in the forecast so weekend projects are my jam.

If you are to prep and sterilize grains, agar and tools I strongly suggest you get a pressure canner, without it there will be head and heart ache.

If for some reason you don't want to get a pressure canner, then PF TEK is where it's at :rockon:

Scour marketplace, craigslist, etc. I got a nice 6qt stainless presto pressure cooker for $30. Cheaper than the mats I lost doing AIO bags and other less ideal methods.

Took a while to find that perfect deal but I love this thing.

Pudin and Stipe along with a host of other senior members have proven that longer sterilization times can make up for the difference in psi. Short of an instapot though, there is literally no substitute, unless youre performing pf tek, in which case boiling in water with a lid can be sufficient (~2hrs)

Same, except I found mine at Goodwill for around $15. It's a regular ol stovetop cooker, but since I got it, my success rate's skyrocketed. I think you can boil PF for a long time and be met w/ success, but I never managed it, personally. That could've been user error, though.

But yeah, thrift stores, consignment shops, and the like a veritable treasure troves of useful shit. Plus, pressure cookers are friggin magic at cooking rice.

No, it is not a heavily debated topic at all. There is no debate. To properly sterilize grain/agar/jars, etc. you need a pressure cooker. Just go get one. New or used, doesn't matter. Get one, you won't regret it. :smile:
