Pressure cooker? 10psi vs 15psi?
    #582548 - 03/18/02 06:32 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I just got a new pressure cooker to start my next attempt at cultivation. My last attempt was a contaminated faliure. I was reading the PF Tek about the pressure cooker and it says a 10-15psi setting for 20 minutes. I read elsewhere and everyone says 15psi is needed. Should i keep the 10psi pressure cooker that i just got or return it and get one capable on 15psi? Thanks for helping a newbie.

I have a 10psi as well. It will work , cook at 1 hour time, medium heat, not low heat. Make sure you hear the steam coming out really loud, boil sound too. Then you can start timing. It is okay to cool of the pot with cold water and take out the jars imidiately as well.

You can keep the 10 psi pressure cooker.
You just have to do it longer...instead of 20 minutes....an hour or more is good.

If you can return it.....you might consider doing that....and get a better one.

I leave my jars in my pressure cooker for an hour after cooking substrate.

My friend uses a cheap little fixed 10PSI PC with NO PROBLEM. As little as 45 minutes of "steaming" (an hour is fine too- if the PC dosent evaporate all of the h2o out by then) works fine. For the life off me I cant understand why so many TEKS still state that a newbie should purchase a more expensive adjustable pressure gauge type PC. They basicly just hold more jars and water, thats the only advantage.

The PF Tek says to boil for an hour or pc for 20 minutes.
It also says overcooking causes dry substrate and stalling jars. There are several things anyone can do "for good measure". But deviating from the tek before you're familure with all it's reasoning just doesn't make good sense to me.
Quick cooling a pressure cooker without allowing time for the inside of the jars to cool, can steam the moisture right out of your jars again causing dry substrate and stalling jars. Read up on presteralizing  " http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml#lower_contamination_rate "
Pick a tek and follow it to the letter. You'll be less likely to post "why isn't this working?"
Just my opinion.:peace:

One of my elves uses a 'leaky' pc that prolly only gets about 8 psi. He says he still has no problems even though he only pc's for 20 minutes.
He lets them sit for another 10 minutes and then lets them cool on the counter.
