big pot/stock cooker vs Pressure Cooker

other than the faster time w/ the pressure cooker are the results usually just as good?
i'm a newbie to this so i'm just wondering. I'm trying to use a big pot first and then a pressure cooker if my results are not favorable. It is more a money issue.... I can afford one but i'd rather use the cheaper of the 2.

you can do this big pot thing for the pf style cakes using the flour and vermic and water but if you ever plan on making spawn or using grain a pressure cooker is a must. you have to be able to reach a temp of 250 or above because waterr boils a 212 thats what the temp would be without using the pressure cokker

I used to do a big pot, it was a pain in the ass, trying to get a towel to stay put, replacing water, etc. Pressure Cookers are cool.

If you can afford one, I would recomend getting yourself a pressure cooker. If you buy a quality one like an All American, you'll never have to buy another one as long as you live. Mirro makes some cheaper models, but with pressure cookers, you really do get what you pay for.

oppppps one more add on question...... they have the nice ones with pressure gauges at walmart for 69-89 bucks...... but they also have the ones that are a bit smaller and range for 39-59..... are these cheaper ones any harder to operate without a psi gauge? For me it is all a learning process and I'm trying not to cut any corners but i know i may make a few mistakes while in the process.

I'm not quite sure about the ones at Walmart, but I can tell you mine *doesn't* have a gauge because it's fully automagic.
I just set weights on the top to either 5, 10 or 15psi and let the baby steam up. If she goes over pressure, she lets off some steam.

Well, I guess you really have to ask yourself where you plan on going with this little hobby. If you're looking to just produce a few specimens, then you shouldn't have a problem with the higher contam rate and don't need a PC. If, on the other hand, you are interested in perfecting your technique or growing on anything other than PF cake (which really aren't all that groovy, once you've tried casings), then I suggest picking one up sooner than later. If you do buy one, I would personally reccomend the All-American canners (they don't use a rubber ring, so it ought to last forever). You can fit 7 quart-sized jars (or many more 1/2 pints) inside the 15.5qt one. My cat owns one, and he loves it to death. Makes the mice nice and tender.
