Pressure cooking problem PLEASE HELP!
    #471154 - 11/27/01 01:40 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Ok here is my situation
Ive been using the pftek and the MMGG both. At one time I had alumnimum foil then i ran out so i switched over to the taping method of the jar holes for my last 18 or so jars...

Im using a 4.2 qt mirro pressure cooker with a max of 10 psi
No guage or anything
Now everytime i pressure cook my 1/2 pint jars for 1 hour, the "soil" inside the jars get spots of brown, not real brown kinda a light brown but definetly darker then the rest of the jars contents.....
Im guessing its because water leaked in and soaked it,but ive experimented a little and i cant fiqure it out.
Is this normal?
I mean on some jars i place mounds of tape over the holes and alumnimum foil to insure no water gets in but i still get these blasted spots

Any thoughts?
Thanks

when you pressure cook the jars the substrate change color, there might be more or less flour in those darker spots, maybe clumps of vermiculite, it' pretty normal. nothing to worry about

Dude!

You are fine!!! I recently came up on a nice pressure canner ( which is what you want, not a cooker if you have the choice). Found it at the swap meet for ten bucks, 21 quart, brand new, well, new/used :) Well, new to me and even came with the instruction book.... BEFORE that I have been using a piece of crap mirro with no guage, no jiggly thing on top and have had NO problems. Just make sure the water doesn't boil out and dry the jars. The crap on the sides is NORMAL. My first few times I was worried to. But it's just like steaming.
if you are using mmgg or pf, you don't need no freakin pressure cooker!!!
Thats Bulloney! The foil you prolly shouldn't skimp on tho, keeps water from puddling up on the tops of your jars while they sterilize!!!
If you REALLY want a great pressure cooker at a low price, go to ebay
and type in pressure cooker, or pressure canner....

GOod luck!

with PF jars, 10psi is more than enough, hell you can do them in a pot with a cover.

Well once I get some more money I plan to purchase an all american cooker at some 100 dollar price.. holds like 7 1/2 pint jars.. which would be awesome..
I currently can only pressure cook 3 jars at a time
Ive spent the last 3 days pressure cooking
Tis a BIG bitch
